EDUCATION BOARD.
The North Canterbury Education Board met at 11 a.m. yesterday. Present —Messrs R. Westenra (in the chair), H. W. Peryman, J. Munuings, J. Keunte, and T. IV. Adams. Appointments on tbe recommendation of the respective Committees were made as under:—Eyreton, Miss A. J. Alley, teacher; Gleuroy, "Mr J. S'.oane, teacher; Kyle, Miss Lamb, teacher ; Southbridge, Mr A. Trevella, assistant. The .resignation was accepted-of Misa Petrie, Oxford East, she having accepted an appointment in the Wellingtou district. The Mistress was permit—d to remain for noother term at Broa<ltield, the average attendance haviug reached the required minimum. The Sydenham Committee, in reply to a letter from the Board, wrote that, when last year permission was given to fourth year pupil teachers to go np for matriculation, it was decided that the permission would not be granted in the future, and that under the resolution Mr Amos's application must be refused. The Board, having written that the whole position as it affected pupil teachers would be considered at a suosequent meeting, decided, in respect of the present case, " that the Board is willing to grant Mr Amos leave to go up for matriculation examination, and that the Sydenham Committee be informed that it they consider the school will suffer by his absence, a substitute will be supplied by the Board at the expense ot Mr Amos." A number of examination reports were read. The Buildings' Committee reported that Mrs Johnstone's tender had been accepted for lease of part of the Kowai Bush Schoof reserve. It was agreed to pay half cost of fencing between the West Lyttelton school f round and Mr Derbidge's property.- Messrs 'eryman and Mannings were appointed to visit the Phillips—wn school with the Clerk of Works and decide what was necessary to be done about the grounds. Ie was considered unlikely that this year there would be auy funds for additions to the master's house at Clarkville; there were no funds available ior a porch at Belfast; The sum of £5 was allowed towards certain repairs at Halkett, and payment waa authorised of the amount promised for work at Porter's Pass. The report was adopted. The Caledonian Society wrote that, having decided to offer another scholars hip, they asked the Board to renew the favour of examining candidates foi it. It was decided that the Society had best make its own arrangements, The Rev. A. Blake, Presbyterian Minister, wrote asking if (Jie Board could provide an aided school at St. Clements, near Ran-gitata-bridge. He supplied particulars as to the children of school age. The Board decided to ask for some further particulars. The Board went into Committee, and on resuming adjourned.
