THE UNEMPLOYED.
The lists for the ladies who have undertaken to help in the direction of collecting subscriptions towards the employment of the aged poor, have been printed and distributed. The ladies are now at work. As, however, there are some parts of the city not yet fully provided for, the Mayor will be happy to hand lists, all of which are signed by him, to any lady who may desire to help in the work. ■ " ; _ At-a meeting of the local branch committee of the Railway! Servants' Society, convened: for the purpose of considering ways' and means for assisting in dealing with the unemployed difficulty, it was decided to comply with the request of the Addington workshops men, and to at once issue subscription lists inviting all railway employees to subscribe half a day's pay, or such other sum as may be convenient to assist in alleviating the suffering which must necessarily ensue during the winter, if those who are in constant employment do not hold out a helping hand to their less fortunate brethren. A number of collectors were appointed, covering the whole of the departments : and the Committee desires it to be fully understood that, although the Society provides the machinery for collecting, fie movement is not by any means to be confined to its members or in any way considered a Society matter. It being clearly the duty of everyone to relieve distress to an extent which circumstances may permit all are earnestly invited to contribute their mite.
His Worship the Mayor wishes it to be known that he has withdrawn his patronage to the concert now in course of being got up in aid of the unemployed. The patronage was at first given under a misapprehension.
