REWI'S MONUMENT.
.AUCKLAND, April 23. The imveilins <-■* Kewi's monument took nlace tcrilay at'Kitiikiui, in the presence of ilarz" assembly of Europeans and JSativee. ThosT present from Aucfclan.-l were Air Seymour Tbon:« (leurgc, Miss (.eorge, Mess-s James Mack ay and Larrick and fnlonel Beck. The following is a correct translation of the Maori inscription on the monument:-" In memory ot Rewi m ninroto last great chief of Jigatimania, SSSSSaSwJ Waikato. Iv the*, part. *n upholder of good between European aud m.«ri Natives and a constant supporter of SS of the Treaty of Wakamy at that if* BewiManiopcto is still living, April £Tl8&4 ' Bora in 1007." The Rev. Mr Wi'ison la surplice, offered u P a short graver which was followed by the Rev. Mr Utos'whoin a neat speech eulogised the Jod qualities of the old chief, after which Mr Seymour George, i>s representative of Sir G. Grey, unveiled the monument, which was received with three rounds of blank cartridge by tho Natives. Speeches were delivered by Nui\ c chiefs, and Messrs McKav, Wigg, and Johns, of Te Awamutu. Mr \V. H. Grace acted a3 interpreter. ThreecheersforSirG. Grey and Rewi and the singing of the National Anthem closed the proceedings. There '.vas to be a great Native feast this evening, aud a Maori haka in the Town hall.
