The first annual general meeting of the Navage Club will be hold at Hobbs' Assembly Rooms oa Monday evening next. A short musical korero will follow the business part of the meeting. \ ißeetiug of the Master Bakers' Association will be held this evening at Messrs Rcliitt and Co.'s Chambers, 145 Hereford A meeting convened by Mr T. McNaught held in the Town Bo»rd room, Amberlev, oa the evening of the 25th instaut, for the purpose of seeing if a Fire Brigade aud engine could be established for the prevention of tires in the town district. About thirty were present. Mr McNaught was voted to *he chair. Mr Greig, Clerk to the Town Beard, who acted as Secretary, read a letter from Mr Wai. Reid, of Dunedin, offering a. 16-manual engine with accessories fortiie sum of £75. The Board's b&lancesheet showed a cash balance at the Bank of £75 7a sd, and oiher assets which brought, the amount of the available assets up u> £93. The following gentlemen consented to act as a Committee :—Messrs Lasceilra, J. J. Wooler, R. S. Turner, aud Jesse Wilson. Mr J. J. Wooler proposed, and Mr R. S. Turner seconded—'" That the Committee appointed approach the Insurance Association on the subject of tiie reductions on premiums, and as to whether they would help bya subscription." Carried. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the meeting. The Desire of Sydenham Lodge, 1.0. G.T., held its usual weekly session in the S.A. Young Soldiers' Barracks, Colombo road, on Wednesday evening last. TheC.T. Bro. Wilson presided, and opened the lodge at 7.30. After the routine business was got through Bro. Vine, S.D.G.G.T., gave a short address, and a very encouraging account of his visit to the Northern lodges. He was heartily thanked for his address, and was asked to convey the greetings of this lodge co the Southern lodges that he may visit. At the Lyceum, to-morrow, Mr W. W. Collins will lecture ou "Incidents from English Martyrology," with limelight illustrations, including representations of the Tower ol London. Musical selections will be,given at 6.45.

Mr Morris Griffiths has arrived to make arrangements for the opening here of an entertaiument under the somewhat taking title of "The Garden of Eden." It has* been exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney for some time, tvnd is spoken of as exceedingly clever and decidedly unique. At the Sunday concert, to be held in the Theatre to-morrow evening, Miss Wilson, Miss Howarde, and Messrs Cadzow, Charles Keede, Dryland, and Lindseli will contribute items. Mr Bunz's orchestra will contribute selections.

At the Chrysanthemum and Frnit Show special prizes are offered to be competed for by ladies only at the show on Thursday next, and it is to be hoped that a number of entries will be received by the Secretary during the next three days. They are as follows :—(1) Table decoration of chrysanthemums, any foliage, space not to exceed 6ft. by 3ffc. (2) Two baskets of chrysanthemums, dressing allowed.

A . course of cix lectures on Elementary Chemistry will be delivered by Professor Bickertou in the Chemical Lecture Theatre. The introductory one of tbe course, on " The Lessons of Chemistry," will be given ou Thursday, May 3rd, at 7.30 p.m. Messrs Tonks, Norton and Co. notify that .they will sell tbe priyileges in coniieciion with the Plumpton Park Club Trotting Meeting, taking p ace on May sth, at their rooms at 2 p.m. on Monday next. At the Temple of Truth Mr Worthington will lecture to-morrow at 11 a.m. on "Confusion," and at 7p.m. on the "Mystery of Evil."

At the Primitive Methodist Church the anniversary services will be held. The Rev. K. Erwin will preach at 11 a.m., Rev. F. W. Isitt at 3 p.m., and Key. Gordon "Webster at 6.30 p.m.

At a special meeting of the Waimakariri Harbour Board on Thursday night, Mr R. Evans in the chair, the Board went into Committee with reference to the defence of the action Sims v the Board, a claim for the sum of £300, Mr M. JN'alder, the Board's solicitor, being present. The action will be tried at the civil sittings of the Supreme Court in Jane, and Messrs T. W. Stringer and M. Nalderwill probably appear for the Board. Inspector Broham yesterday received areport from IVofessorßickertonupon theanalyeis of the liquor found in the possession of the man Benjamin Midgley, who recently committed suicide ia Sydenham. The report states that the liquid was free from adulteration, showed.a strength equal to 19.7 under proof, and appeared to have as much the character of whiskey as of brandy. The Secretary of the Chri ß tchnrcb Hospital desires to acknowledge the receipt of periodicals from Mrs Cameron, vegetables and fruit from a friend, large doU from E. A. 8., flowers and scarf from Mrs J. Bishop, Papanui, old linen from a friend, old flannel from Mrs Pitman, and apples from Mr Wilson, K&iapoi. *

Mr M. Murphy, Secretary to the Agricultural Conference, haa received replies from about twenty Associations, stating their intention of sending delegates to the coming meeting of the Conference, to be opened at Wellington on the 29th of May next. Among these Associations are several th*t did not take fart in tbe previous Conference, and the number of delegates attending this year will therefore be much greater than on that occasion.

A meeting of the New Zealand iJiock Book Association will be held *t Wellington in May next, prior to the sitting of the Agricultural Umference, to arrange for a plan of the proposed publication. It is probable that one hook will be found to answer the purpose for the whole of New Zealand, at any rate for the present. Owing to the Art Gallery being enRaged for the flower show and ball M.
