MARKET REPORTS.

CANTERBURY HORSE MARKET.

Mr John T. Matson reports that his *ale on Saturday at Mark Lane was an unqualified success. The attendance of buyers was the largest witnessed since the opening day. The catalogue was most comprehensive and varied. The entry of unbroken horses from the Ahuriri Estate and the consignments from Kaikoura were the theme of admiration, and, as a whole, the horses upon offer exceeded by far, "in quality," any lots offered for years. Prices ranged high, as a rule. Of course, there were some sanguine owners,, who at all times count their " geese as equal to other people's swans," but as a rale, values may be classed as very fair and satisfactory. This was very notable in good sound hacks and for all classes of the light plough or active draught. Buyers came from all parts. One Southern buyer helped the sale a lot, bidding " free and openhanded " for every good lot as it passed under the hammer, securing a valuable consignment for Monday's train. Prices were more even than is usual, and values such as £13, £15, £16, £18, £20, £22 and £24 were frequently recorded. We were pleased to notice the entire absence of the " lame, halt and blind." These do not find a resting-place at Mark Lane. The open air aud searching inspection afforded by the broad daylight drives the inferior animals to more remote corners. There is without question a real good free demand for all classes of sound animals, and be it said to the credit of buyers, to the utter neglect of "worn-outs." Next Saturday " Mark Lane" will offer a consignment of some 80 head of North Island ponies, cobs, ie, also a special line of tram sorts. The results of last Saturday's sale totalled the best part of £1000 (one thousand pounds). The acting salesman tender- his thanks all round.—[Advt.]
