ASCENT OF MOUNT EARNSLAW.
A party of five, including two ladi«a snd a boy of fourteen, successfully accomplishsd the ascent of Mount Earnslaw ou Tnurid-y. ACQUISITION OF NATIVE LAND. ! A Gisborne telegram saya that Mr John Brooking, Government Land Purchase Commissioner, returned from Opotiki, Bay of Plenty, on Saturday. He has just acquired 41,000 acres of Native land, 16,000 being ia the Tekenui block, in Waipa, and 15,000 acres in the Tahora, a largo block of 213,000 acres, which extends from Hawke's Bay to the Bay of Plenty. Of this block the Crown have now obtained 65,000 aoreß. Mr Brooking so far has experienced no difficulty in dealing with the Natives.
