LEESTON SCHOOL.

TO THE EDITOR OT THE PRESS. ' j SrR, —I see by your report ,in Friday's issue of the Board of Education on the I above school trouble, : th°.t they have put off their decision on the matter until after the j next annual election of School .Committees, j which ia very much to bo deplored, aB it is well known* tbat matters have not been j going on as-smoothly at the Leeston School as could be. wished, owing to the lack of good feeling between the headmaster and some of the Committee, as also a great number of the parents. It shows a great; weakness on the part of tbe Board after issuing a notice to the .Committee, askibg the headmaster to resign, for tbem to put it off until after the annual election of Committees. Now, having lived in this district for a number of years and watched the school grow.from a very small beginning until it hod assumed very large dimensions and position second to none, it is with regret that I now see it gradually assume its old position, viz., that of au iufant Bchool, and see our neighbouring school of Doyleston take that position which the Leeston school is entitled to. . ThenagaintheLeestonschool hasoneteacher too many, as according to the Board's scale tbe school is only entitled to four teachers, viz., master, mistress, and. two pupil teachers. Doyleston has been doing the same work as the Leeston school with only three teachers with a better percentage of passes than obtained at Leeston. Now, I think, Mr Editor, that the Board should take more interest in the welfare of this important district and not allow the Leeston school to. degenerate down 'to an infant school. The number now going from the Leeston school numbers forty children, all of whom would come back to Leeston if a change took place.—Yours, &a, Old Resident.
