The Kindergarten children will give an J entertainment in the Social Hall of the Students of Truth, corner of Madras and Gloucester streets, this evening at 7.30 o'clock, consisting of a oautala called " The Hermit's Cell," and some fancy dancing, tableaux, music (both vocal and instrumental. The ordinary meeting of the Akaroa Borough Couucil was held on Wednesday evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Armstrong, Chappull, Cheok.ey, Munro, Peuu, and Taylor. Correspondence was read—From the Dog Ranker, stauug that the fees of £12 15s had beeu collected for last year within the Borough. From H. G. Robinson, applying for an auctioneer's license. Grauted. The Treasurer, requesting the sum of £41 Os 2d be paid into the Bank of New Zealand, being interest on loan of £1640. The finance report showed receipts to be £140 13j 2d, accounts passed for payment £40 12s 2«1, dr. balance at Bank of New Zealand £131 13s sd. The sum of £10 was granted to the Free Library. The Chairman of the Wharves Committee reported that the Committee recommended the shed to be . lined with iron on the inside to prevent the vermiu from coming in. The suggestion was adopted. Some routine business was transacted, and the meeting adjourned. The monthly meeting of the Mandeville and Raugiora River Board was bold on January 4th. Present—Messrs Muicock (Chairman), Duncan, Kelcher, and Pearson. A letter was tead from the ReturningOfficer stating that Alessra Malcolm Duncan, William Kelciier, Edward Muicock, Wiliiain Pearson, and William Smith had been declared duly elected members of the Mandeville and Rangiora Rivor Board for the ensuing three years. Mr Edward Muicock was elected Chairmau. Letters wete read—From Henry Allison, requesting that his wife's name be taken off the rale roll and that of W. H. Lapthorne be inserted for 6a. 2r 9p of R.S. No. 1439. Agreed to be done. The Surveyor was directed to have the willows and broom in the main drain and along thtf roadside from the Flaxtou bridge to the river cleared, and to invite tenders for cleaning the creeks and drains before the winter months. On Wednesday evening a few of tlie ; friends of Mr J. Tracy, who had been in the employ of the Railway Depaitmeuc foxthree years, entertaiued him at the Southbridge Hotel, to bid him farewell on his ' leaving the district fur Clirislchurch. Dr. Withers-occupied'thu chair, and proposed the toasfc of the guest, which was duiy i honoured. A pocial evening was spent, • after which Mr C. H. Willis presented Mr Tracy with a gold aloert and pendant as a token of the esteem by which he was he d by his friends. Mr Tracy suitably responded. A concert ia aid of the funds of the Warehousemen's Cricket Ciub will be given ia the Oddfellows' Hall on Tuesday, 23rd inst. The vocal items will be yiveu by Mrs Edgar, Miss Da vie, Messrs Edgar, Millar, H. Reeves, and. Woodiiouse, and the instrumental portion by Mrs Wilding and the Estudiantina Band. The result of the election for the Sfc. Martin's Ward of the Heathcote Road Board district was the return of Mr H. B. Kirk, the old member, the numbers being Kirk 43, Ross 32. ' . Eitewhere it is notified that the interim dividend of 5 per ceut. for the year ended 30th September in conueclion with the National Bank of New Zealand will be payable on antf after the 20th inst. The Northern Building and Loan Society Permanent, started eleven years ago, holds its annual meetiDg on Wednesday, January 31st, when a satisfactory balance will be presented. A new issue of shares began, with this month. The welcome to the Indian contingent of the Salvation Army will take place at the Barracks, Victoria street, to-night at eight o'clock. The half-yearly ■ general meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Club will be held at the boathouse on Friday, 26th inst., at 8 p.m. ' There was a large attendance at the Lyceum last night, notwithstanding the inclement weather, when a social was given, in aid ox the funds of the Lyceum brass band; Dancing was indulged in, interspersed with songs, hornpipes, and selections by the band. During the evening Mr J. Hall of Hobart, and Mr Joseph Symes, editor of * the Liberator, gave shoit addresses. ; The entertainment given at the Oddfellows' Hall, Lyttelton, on - Wednesday night, by a company of officers and men from H.M.s. Guragoa, in aid of the Lyttelton Seamen's Rest, was very successful. The programme was nearly the same as that given by the earns company at J;he Tuain street Hall ths other night, and nearly all the items were encored. At the conclusion of the entertainment the Rev. E. E. Chambers, on behalf of the Committee of the Seamen's Rest, moved a hearty vote of thanks to the performers for their kindness in so readily coining forward to assist the Rest. He specially mentioned Lieutenant Warren, the conductor of the company, and Corporal Hill, the efficient stage manager. Lieutenant Warren acknowledged the vote, of thanks, and the performers and their comrades gave three hearty cheers for the Lyttelton people. The compliment was returned by the audience with much enthusiasm A successful dance was subsequently held, the music being provided by the Curagoa'e string band, assisted by Miss O'Brien (piano) and Mr Riordan (violin).
