NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

The monthly meeting of the Pioneer Bicycle Clnb was held at headquarters last night, and moderately attended; Mr H. Thompson piesidsd. It was resolved to lease new rooms in Mr Chas. Clark's building, now in course of erection, and to celebrate the opening with a concert. Four new members were elected. Mr Dunsford reported the arrangements which had been made with the Lancaster Park Company for the use of the grouud for the December meeting, and they were accepted as being fairly satisfactory. Messrs Brown, Moss and Waller were appointed a sub-Committeo to confer with the Committee from the Canterbury Rugby Union concerning the question of a now ground. Mr C. G. Moss was elected Secretary of the Club. The meeting discussed aud pass-'d the preliminary programme for the Boxing Day meeting, and then adjourned. The annual business meeting in connection with the St. Asaph street Free Methodist Church was held on Wednesday evening last. The usual routine of church business was proceeded with, the main business being the invitation of Rev. John Hosking to remain iv charge of the church for another year. It is a canon of the denomination that miuisters may remain at churches during an indefinite period, but the call to be renewed from year to year. Mr Hosking consented to remain another year, and very flattering encomiums were given him by his church. Messrs G. Bowron, C. R. Leadley, R. H. Turner, aud Rev. John Hosking were appointed delegates to the annual Conference of the denomination, which will bo held in Christchurch next January, at which delegates will attend from all parts of the colony.

At the usual meeting in connection with Our Father's Church to-night there will be a discussion on " What is Sin ?"

The annual sports in connection with Christ's College will be held on Thursday, October 12th. Entries for the old boy's' race close ou October 7th.

The entries for the annual horse parade, nnder the auspices of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, will take place on the new show grounds tomorrow. There is a very good entry in all the classes. The annual sales will follow.

The usual weekly meeting of the Palette Club was hold at the Art Gallery last night. Tho subject chosen for illustration was "Springtime," and some good work was done. It was decided to hold an art union in connection with the next exhibition, and that all Clubs exhibiting should share in it. The annual meeting of the Martini-Henry Rifle Club will be held this evening. Mr S. |Jolly, who some years ago contested the Ashburton electorate with Sir Julius Vogel, intends giving a political address at the New Brighton schoolroom this evening. Although not taking an active part in politics, Mr Jolly has continued to take considerable interest in political matters, and his address will, no doubt, prove of an interesting nature. The entries tor the annual parade at Rangiora close on Saturday, the parade taking place ou Tuesday morning next. Yesterday afternoon, Sister Edith, the newly-arrived deaconess,. gave an address at the V.M.C.A. Hall to a number of ladies. The address dealt very exhaustively with the appointment of deaconesses in the early history of the Church. Then Sister Edith appealed to those present to form a band of helpers, and also to subscribe towards the work. She stated she wanted at least £200 a year to carry'on the work, and hoped that all would do what they could in this direction. An eloquent appeal to all who could help in any way closed'the address. Sister Edith mentioned that she would be at home at St. Catherine's room on October. 19th, at 3 p.m., to receive the names of anyone willing to become helpers.
