WELLINGTON NOTES.
September 25. Some idea can now be formed who are the candidates likely to contest Wellington city seat at the coming general election. The list is a goodly one numerically, including as it- does ten probable and three possible candidates, but the qualifications of ths gentlemen are in some cases, to say the least of them, very questionable ones. The list of probables 13 as follows—Messrs G. Fisher, Wm. McLean, J. Duthie (the present members), T. K. McDonald, E. G. Jellicoe, U. Luke, T. Dwan, J. ODea, F. H. Fiaser, aud H. B. Vogel. The possibles are Messrs H. D. Bell, H. Gully, and A. A. Baraetfc. The three present members are well known, and nothing need be said of them. Of the others Mr McDonald (auctioneer) was elected at the last general election, but had to resign on account of bankruptcy. Mr Fraser is a bookseller and the manager of a financial institution. He also had a seat in Parliament for one session. He is considered likely to get the temperance vote. Mr ODea, an architect, Mr Dwan, a newspaper proprietor, and Mr A. A. Barnett, a financial agent, are all shining lights in the Liberal Association. Mr Jellicoe is a lawyer who was defeated at the last election. Mr Luke is an ironfounder, who has a good standing in Liberal circles. Mr H. li. Vogel is a lawyer, and the son of Sir Julius Vogel. Mr H. D. Bell. Mayor of the City, has announced his intention of not standing, bub is to be again asked. Mr H. Gully, Mr Bell's partner, is talked of as a likely candidate. Of the above named candidates all, with the exception of Messrs Duthie, Fisher, Bell and Gully, 3tand iv the Labour Liberal interest. Messrs Fisher and Bell would probably run on the independent ticket. There are rumours of a genuine working man being brought out in the Labour interest. The Labour Liberal candidates have to be submitted to the different Trades and Labour organisations for them to make a choice as to whom they will support. A petition ia beinp; signed aeking Sir Robert Stout to stand for the city in the Liberal interest. For the Wellington suburbs seat, Dr. Newman (Opposition) the present member and Mr T. M. Wilford (Liberal) son of Dr. Wilford, a young lawyer about 23 or 24 years ot age, and born and brought up iv the district;, will probably be the only caudidatea. The doctor's chances are more favoured. Mr Wilson, the present member, aud Mi* C, B. Izard, ex-member for Wellington, will contest the Otaki seat. During the hearing of a charge of embezzlement, before Mr Martin, R.M., today, a young man named .Grantham, who was sentenced to a month's imprisonment, said he had used the monies embezzled in gambling at the Wellington Working Men's Club. Jn the Press, to-night the Club officials state that Grantham was nob a member, but was admitted on four occasious upon a visiting card from the Napier Working Men's Club, aud never, so far as the Steward or any official knew, had played any game there. As an instance of care taken against gambling, it ia stated that a transaction which had a suspicious look, having occurred in connection with a billiard tournament played at the Club, the Club immediately suspended all who appeared to be concerned in it, and demanded the restoration of the money won to the original owner, and a written apology for a breach of the by-laws. One member declined to apologise, and his name was struck off the membership list. The Wellington Shipwrights' Society are celebrating their twentieth anniversary by a dinner to-night.
