DUNEDIN NOTES.
September 24. Sir R. Stout has given no definite reply* but it is understood that a representative deputation which waited on him at the railway station, informed him that a large measure of support in the electorate was assured to him, and that he will accede to the request. Caversham will be wooed by Messrs Morison (Ministerialist), Barron (Independent), Lee Smith (Ministerialist), and possibly Hatton, who will run in the prohibition interest, and as supporter of Sir Robert Stout. It is rumoured that the Government are anxious that Mr Shore, manager of the Kaitangata Coal Company,' should oppose Mr Allen, but I do not thiuk he'will respond. The Star says Mr Reeves ought to treat Education Boards with more fairness in regard to the measles epidemic. It points out that the Minister has full funds voted by Parliament, and instead of starving School Committees the money that has been withheld should go a long way towards relieving them of their pressing difficulties. Pattern should be taken by the English code, which enables the depart ment, in case of epidemic, to suspend examinations and avoid the curtailment of the grant from similar causes.
