News from Brazil states that Santa Cruz has surrendered to the insurgents, and in consequence President Peixoto has abandoned his coast position. Letters received from Rio declare that all porta, except Santa Cruz, are either neutral or favour the rebels. Three rebel warships have sailed to blockade Santos. It is expected that the President will succumb. Loyal officers murdered a newspaper editor who was a supporter of the rebels. The rebellion is spreading inland. The Kebel Admiral shot his Deputy and Marine Lieutenaut for attempting to discourage the rising. Later. The foreign warships have consented to allow the rebels to buy food from merchant vessels in the harbour. Santos is expected to join the rebels. President Peixcto is practically defeated, and it is intended to restore the Monarchy. It is reported that women folk belonging to the naval officers who revolted were subjected to the indignity of being whipped by the Government. In Kio shocking scenes were witnessed during the bombardment of the city. Shops were looted and wooien outraged by gangs of roughs. The' streets were strewn with mangled corpees.
