SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB MEETING.

Second Day.—Friday, September 15. Fine weather prevailed for the second day of the meeting, and the attendance showed an improvement on the opening day. Needless to say, It having rained during the night, the course was in much the same sloppy state as it was on the Thursday, while the traffic had made the lawn and enclosures in a muddy and slippery condition. Half a dozen went out for the Hurdle race, Invarier again showing his partiality to heavy going by coming away from Smuggler in the run home and winning comfortably. Despite his victory in the first hurdle race, Mr Macdonald's horse was not much fancied, his backers receiving the substantial dividend of £8 9s. The Gladstone Handicap fell to Rosehill. the favourite, but he only just got home from the-poorly supported First King, and although the chief handicap of the day only brought out three competitors it produced the first race of the meeting, the antagonism of Lady Zetland and Au Re voir producing much speculation. Au Revoir jumped off at score and made a warm pace from the outset. Lady Zetland was however, never far away, and joining issue at the final bend defeated Mr Butler's game son of St. George in the run home. The Tally-ho Steeplechase was reduced to a match between the stable companions, Bell Bird and Mount Cook, and while Thursiay's winner was sailing ahead at his leisure the companion horse baulked repeatedly, and after Bell Bird had finished the endeavour to make him complete the course was given up. A good finish in the Members' Plate saw Beach defeat two better favourites in Freeborn and JacK, the sport being brought to a conclusion by the victory of Warrington over five others in the Final Handicap. The total amount put through the totalisator for the two days was £1980, which is £1000 short of the sum operated on at the Spring Meeting last season.
