(press association telegrams.) AUCKLAND, September 15. The City Council have decided to build a turret clock for the Free Public Library at a cost of over £600 on the model of the Invercargill Post Office clock. At the annual meeting of the Northern Boot and Shoe Company the report showed a profit of £401. After the usual writing off, £20 was left to carry forward to the profit and loss account, which now stands at £2036 on the credit side. No dividend was declared, a3 it is intended to purchase fresh machinery. Beere, the Auckland long-distance runner, is unable to get leave to take part in the Australasian championship meeting. The municipal elections resulted in the return of Mr H. T. Garratt for the Karangahape Ward in the City Council. For the Newmarket Borough Council Messrs J. S. Angus, George Heron and W. Whyman were returned. For Parnell, Messrs N. W. Pollard, J. Thornes, W. S. Whitley were returned, the other candidate, Mrs Amelia Matson, being beaten by only four votes. WELLINGTON, September 15. The young men Cloke and Burton, who have been raiding out-houses in the Thordon end of the town, were committed for trial on five charges, and sentenced to three months' imprisonment on a number of others. The postal authorities of New South Wales are enforcing the law prohibiting the delivery of letters to lottery and sweep promoters. In consequence, a large number of letters addressed to " Tatter-sail's " and containing huudreds of pounds have recently been returned to the dead letter office of New Zealand. The full list of prohibited names is—George Adams, Adam Bede, Star, Henry, 1.X., Cosgrove, Tattersall, Confidence, M.Y., Gala, H. A.exander, Manager, E. J. deßomford. DUNEDIN, September 15. The Board of Land Purchase Commissioners held sittings here all this week, to consider offers to the Government of land for settlement, but the proceedings have not been made public.
