ROAD BOARDS.

LITTLE RIVER. The ordinary meeting was held on July 3id. Present—&ir Buchanan (Chairman) and all the members. Correspondence was read—From Mr Hickman, enclosing an order to pay from Mr Breitmeir, which order the Board refused to honour. From the Charitable Aid Board, enclosing names of persons receiving relief. From the Department of Agriculture, enclosing leaflets descriptive of the Californian thistle., It was resolved that the Chairman distribute those leaflets, which were considered very important. From Mr McPhail, that repairs on Island Bay road would be completed in a week. The Clerk was instructed to visit and inspect. Land and Income Tax Department, enclosing form of declaration re rates collected. This was duly signed by the Chairman. From the Akaroa County Council, a demand for rates. It was resolved that this be forwarded to the occupier of the land referred to. From' Mr Smart, that the contractor for supplying crusher with boulders would not be likely to keep the machiue in work. It was resolved that the Clerk be authorised to put men and teams on to assist where necessary, and that the contractor receive notice to that effect. The Clerk'e action in arranging for spawling of stones for the crusher was approved of. Also in having metal carted on the road from crusher. It was resolved that tenders be invited for team work, single and double teams at per day for twelve months. Relative to repairs to various bridges, the Clerk was instructed to prepare the estimate of the cost, including iron bark girders and decking, to be in by next meetine. The Clerk was instructed to have 100 yards metal broken in the neighborhood of Rabbit Island. Mr 'Frank Gread applied for a foot crossing over the creek near the cemetery at Little River. The Clerk was instructed to attend to this matter. It was resolved—That Mr White and the Clerk attend to improve ford on Western Valley road, and that Messrs Buchanan, Montgomery and White arrange as to the location of the crusher on this road. Mr Birdling gave notice that he would move at the next meeting of the Board, to be held on August 7th—" That a rate of three-eighths of a penny in the £ be levied for the period from Ist April, 1893, to 31st March next." After passing accounts for payment the Board adjourned.

RAKAIA.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held on 3rd July. Present— Messrs Parker Westenra (in the chair), J. Brown, R. N. Bealey, and A. Colville. The Surveyor's report was read and considered. From the Selwyn County Council, offering a bonus of £1 for every £2 expended by the Board during June, July and September, 1893,' on the destruction of small birds, the total amount payable not to exceed £10. From the same, informing the Board that Lots 1, 3 and 4 of Keserves 1808 and 1809 were let on perpetual lease at an annual rental of £20 63 2d, one-third of which will be payable to the Board. It was decided that before entering upon the expenditure of these thirds in providing the water supplies applied for by the occupiers, it should be ascertained whether the Board will receive any portion of the purchase money for Lot 2, Reserve 1808, which had been sold to Mr D. Shaw, and which wouldbe equally benefited with the. other lots by the proposed water supplies. From Mr J. Goss, requesting the Board to prepare certain culverts for traction engine traffic. Resolved—"That Mr Goss be informed that the culverts in question meet the requirements of the ordinary tx"affic, but in common with all other old timber culverts in the district are unfit to I carry traction engines, and the Board will ! take no responsibility in the event of their ! breaking down und6r such heavy weights. They will, however, provide suitable planks for the use of his engine when crossing the largest of the culverts and will substitute open crossings for the smaller ones as they become unserviceable." From Mr W. Clifford and others applying for foot planks on the creeks on Steventon road. Referred to the Surveyor. From Mr John Henry re turning off water for the annual water-race cleaning. Resolved—"That for the approaching cleaning of the Haldon race the water shall be turned off for two days at the commencement of the work, and again for two days in about a fortnight after. Tenders were opened for the supply of 500 yards of shingle on Two Chain road, and the tender of Robt. Gibson at Is per yard accepted. Resolved— That Mr Bealey and the Surveyor inspect Ardlui road, and report to the next meeting upon the question of completing the shingling of it. Resolved—That application be made to the owner of Ardlui Estate for permission to open a shiugle pit on that property for the purpose of shingling a portion of Mitchell a road. The manager ef the Hororata water-races attended with hie report, which was read and considered. A considerable amount of minor business was dealt with, and the passing of accounts on the monthly pay sheet, amounting to £527, terminated the meeting.
