.../. July 13. At the inquest on who is locally known as the mad butcher, it was elicited that he had some years ago been long confined itf-tiie Lunatic' Asylum. Things had not prospered with the couple, and latterly they bad had a hand-to-month existence. This preyed oh her mind until her friends thought she was becoming as mad as her husband. She' had often complained of his treatment, and hod evidently had a very hard life. Sergeant Geerin said the deceased called at North Dunedin Station yesterday, and wanted, the police to stop her husband purchasing cattle at the saleyards, as tneir means were exhausted and they were doing no business whatever. The Sergeant told her the police could not interfere, and advised her to consult her friends, hut she replied that they had no influence and she least of all. She seemed in very depressed spirits. Campbell had complained to the police that she had attempted suicide by eating matches, but the police failed to obtain any corroboration. She appeared to dread being throwa ou the world. Neighbours said the deceased wa3 a tidy, temperate Woman, but Campbell grave way to drink, and appeared in Court this afternoon in anything but a sober or rational state, and behaved so eccentrically that the coroner had to order his removalSeveral of the witnesses said Campbell was not responsible for his actions. A verdict of "Suicide while temporarily insane" was returned.
