WELLINGTON NOTES.
July 13.
Two youngsters, who*had gone for a ramble at the Heads yesterday made a gruesome discovery, Six human Bknlls being found by theta. Tally reported the matter to the police, who despatched a man to make inquiries. The p-ttlls T the boys say, have evidently been*'there for some time, and the police think they are relics of an old Maori burying ground. It was freely stated ..about town to-day that Mr Sdddoh has promised to kill the Direct Veto Bill by she" little tricks and dodges the Government have the power of making use of. The temperance party, however, say they do not think the Premier Would date to take such a step. The lew characters with which the town is at present pestered have taken up a new line of business, and have apparently abandoned burglarising for street robberies. ** Stickihg-Up "cases and attempted " etick-Ihgs-Up" are reported at the rate of about half a dozen each day, . and things are looking serious in this respect. The thieves are, generally speaking, too cunning to give much chance of capturing th.m, usually confining their operations to unfrequented places and never attacking any but single persons. Last evening, however, three of them, it is alleged, robbed a young fellow from the country in a most barefaced way near the Salvation Army Barracks and gave him a good beating into the bargain. They Were, however, identified later on in the evening by the victim of the attack, and after some trouble were arrested. They came before the Court this morning and we're remanded until Tuesday. Mr C. 0. Graham, Official Assignee, today left for his new sphere of labour, Dunedin, being given a flattering send-off by a large number of his friends of the mercantile community. It was stated at ihe gathering that Mr Graham was being sent to Dunedin as a man of the highest qualification was needed there at the present time. The Gnlcber Company have practically completed the work for' the installation of electric, lighting at private houses in this city, and all the machinery fixed except the dynamos, which aro expected daily. The Opera House Company is considering the advisability of lighting the building by electricity.
