MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATIONS.

The Christchureh Baptist Tabernacle Young People's Mutual Improvement Society held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday, Mr Lawrence in the chair. There was a large attendance to hear a discussion ou " Should Home Rule be granted to Ireland." Messrs J. G. Fraser aud Dixon took the affirmative, and Messrs C. H. Cox and N. Jenkin took the negative. Both parties made able speeches, after which the discussion became general, the following members taking part: —For the affirmative — Messrs Olney, Butterlield and Roy ; for. the negative — Messrs Toneycliffe, TaylorPartridge, and Mills. The result of the poll was that Home Rule was lost by a large majority. During the evening music was contributed by Miss Corrick and. Mr Bulterfield. The Papanui Wesleyan Mutual Improvement and Recreation Club held its weekly meeting on Wednesday evening. Mr W. J. Cress well, Vice-President, occupied the chair, and after the routine business called on the Editor to read the "Journal." The leading article dealt with the question of christening the paper, which is called the " Rouseabout," There were a goodly number of articles and letters contributed, one of which bein?; entitled " The Moral Training of Children," by a lady member, deserves special mention, as also does a poem contributed, entitled " Dan'l's Away." There were also the usual columns provided for births, deaths and marriages and advertisements, which provoked hearty amusement. A column was also devoied to "Search Lights," which caused roars of laughter. The first meebing of the Primitive Methodist Mutual Improvement Society was held in the Cambridge terrace church on Thursday night. The President, the Rev. J. Dawson, occupied the chair, and gave au address, which was followed by songs by Misses Frost and Fuller (2), and Mr Bumpus. Miss Bpnrne and H. Garge gave recitations, aud Mr Earwaker a reading, while impromptu speeches were made by several members.
