ROAD BOARDS.
AVON.
Hhe ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Mond&y last. Present—Mr C. Burgess (Chairman), and Messrs Dunlop, Homer, Nicholls and Mclmyre. Letters were considered from Selwyn County Coua«il, re White's fozidge ; from Official Assignee, re Trascott's and Ivey's rates, to be demanded of owners; from "Resident Engineer Railway Department, approviug of diversion of Ferry road ; and from Treasury, re conversion of" New Brighton loan. The Chairman to arrange for putting Wilson and Huwkes streets. New Brighton, in order. Deputation received asking to have 60 chains of Racecourse road metalled, and another portion clayed. Resolved to metal 20 chains. Messrs Clarke and Carboy interviewed the Board, and it was decided to re-pay deposits as asked. The tender of ■Mr K. Thompson was accepted for providing oil, &c, and lighting lamps at New Brighton, and that of Messrs Barker for forming Travis' road. Tenders Cor broken metal were accepted, and it was decided to advertise for fresh tenders for shingle A list of alterations of names, &c, in valuation list were approved, and ordered to be entered on rolls. Several applications recemly received of other alterations in rolls siawl over lor enquiry, and further consideration at next ordinary meeting. Mr Homer gavo notice of motion that j Grant's road be shingled, and Mr Mclntyre I to shingle River road, Winslow, and the 'Board adjourned.
MAXDfiYILLE AND RANGIORA.
The monthly meeting of this Board waa held on March 10th. Present — Messrs Macfarlane (Chairman), G. Wallace, J. B. Moody, J. Stalker, and D. Mclntyre. The Surveyor reported during the S. W. gale a falling willow branch broke the hand rails of Little Ashley bridge. As there were a number of sheep travelling, he suggested shingle be put on each side of crossing. These matters were ordered to be attended to. The skew bridge being in need of repair, it was decided to write to the Eyreton Road Board asking that Board to meet a deputation to consider what repairs were necessary. It was decided to leave the matter of gorse near Mr Hickland's to the Surveyor to report. Letters were read —From Rev. F. P. lendall, calling attention to a case for charitable aid. It was decided that the Board ' did not consider the case one deserving of aid, and that the referred to, being an able-bodied man, should be able to provide for his family. From the' Cost Board, drawing attention to gorse on Boundary road and the way in which a landowner had ploughed the roadside and filled a ditch. Referred to the Surveyor; aleo the question of patching the same road. From the Oxford Board, forwarding resolution setting forth that the Act for clearance of gorse on roads by adjoining occupiers was not workable, and that it should be amended to compel owners to keep half-width of road free from gorse and other, noxious vegetation irrespective of whether they have spread from their lands or fences. It was . decided that this Board concur. in the same ; view. It was decided that all rateemust be paid by March 31st. Accounts amounting ■to £28 6s 10d were passed, and the Board ♦djourned. . j
TEMPLETON.
The monthly meeting of this Road Board was held on Monday, the 23th instant. Present—Messrs Carpenter (Chairman), S. Bailey, J. Taylor, Marsh and J. Carr. Correspondence was read from the Selwyn County Council in reply, stating that in future th# Council will be glad to consult 'with , the Board before commencing any •water-race work which will interfere with any of- the roads in this district. From the same, in reply, relative to the powers of the Board in respect of footpaths situated within the limits proclaimed as water-races on certain roads within the district, and stating that since the passing oi the Water Supply Act, 1891, it is nob necessary to proclaim land on which water-! races are to be coneferocted, and that although prior to this it was necessary .to Wo so the Council lays no claim to the 25 liuks of road so proclaimed beyond the right to construct and maintain the races or. the land referred to. The letters were received. From the same, stating that the Council had informed the Executors of James Lane, that a surrender of the leases of Reserves 325 and 2528 .would be accepted, eubjeet to all rente tlue being paid. From the Chief Surveyor, returning tracing of plan showing road to be closed adjoining E.S. 1983 dujy certified, original being retained for record. It was decided to hold the public meeting necessary in connection with this question on the 10th April next, and the Clerk was directed to advertise accordingly. From the Rev. W. T. P. Winter, asking permission to use the storm-water ditch on the South road for the purpose of carrying race water to the Riccarton parsonage grounds. Granted, subject to the Surveyor's supervision. It was resolved that Reserve 2528 1» let to Mr W. Tuft for a term of five years, at a rental of £1 per annum, upon the Bsoal conditions. The Rate Collector reported rates outstanding £7 8s 4d. The Board decided in a case of poverty to remit the amount. Summonses for the recovery of the balance had been issued. Accounts' amounting to £82 193 were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned to Monday, April 10th.
SPREYDON.
An adjourned meeting of the above Board was held on Monday evening. PresentMessrs Handisides (Chairman), J. Rogers; W. OUif and S. Smart. It wa* resolved to take steps to recover the amount due to the Board on LO.U. given by the residents on Hoy's road towards the formation of that road. The Clerk was instructed "to write to the Gas Company to inquire whether the mains had been carried as far as Hoy's road so as to enable them to erect a lamp there. Iα respect to lamp at corner of Stark'a road and Selwyn street, the roadra&u undertook to repair the lamp, the glase of which had been broken, and also to enquire about the lighting of the same. It was unanimously resolved that the Clerk be instructed to summons every fifth defaulter after the 27th of the present month who had not paid their rates, aud those who had not paid their rates for 1891-2 to be proceeded agaiust immediately. A memorandum was read from Mr C. P. Hugonin diuin ou Wilderness farm. lissa>ed, tha.t the roadman .should see Mr ' Whitlow about clearing it out and then to arrange with the Chairman about the price.! The C'ierfc was instructed to put Mr Eros* tick's came on the roll in place of Mr Geo. McClatchie. The meeting thtn adjourned.
