TEMUKA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

The annual distribution of prizes took place on Thursday afternoon, when there -was an unusually large attendance of

visitora. The chair was taken by Mr W. Storey, who, on behalf of the Committee, welcomed the attendance of Mr A. E. and Mrs Rhodes, who had kindly consented to present the prizes. Mr Rhodes gave a brief address, in the course of which he thanked the Committee for their invitation to be present, the moreespeeially a3 it was coupled with one to Mrs Rhodes. He, as one educated at Canterbury schools, had always taken a great interest in education, and thought all should acknowledge their indebtedness to the early settlers who had so richly endowed their province with eduoational advantages. He regretted the endowments did not admit of many scholarships being given, but spoke in high terms of praise of the advantages afforded at Canterbury College for students to attend classes in engineering, mining, &c, these, in liis opinion, having more practical results than a purely classical education. He paid a graceful tribute to the memory of their late head master, Mr W. Bryars, B. A., whose untimely loss they all deplored, and, in conclusion, while wishing them a very enjoyable holiday and a merry Christmas, urged the scholars not to devote it merely to selfish eajoyment, bat to assis; their parents as far as possible, and also to bear in mind the necessity for thoughtful consideration of others, and to extend to all those courtesies which rendered their domestic and other relations bo enjoyable.

Several songs were sung by the children under the leadership of Mr B. H. Low, the acting head master, after which Mr Rhodes presented the general prizes and Mrs Rhodes the sewing prizes.

The Revs. J. Dellow and J. Dickson having given brief addresses, Mr Rttssbix moved a cordial vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Rhodes for attending, and congratulated their member upon having for a helpmate a representative of a family of whom the colony was justly proud.

Mr Salmond moved a, vote of thanks to the donors of prizes and to the staff, whose labours had resulted very successfully, and paid a tribute to the moral qualities or the late head master.

Cheers were given for the visitors and the Chairman, and the proceedings terminated.
