THE SHIP WELLINGTON.
A ship was signalled as coming from she north late on Saturday evening. It turned out to be the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Wellington, 1247 tons. Captain Cowan, which having had •to slip her cables at Napier had put in to re-fit. The tug- went down to her about 10 p.m., and as the ship was off Long Look Out Point it was not till about 5 O'clock on Sunday morning that the ship was brought in and moored at the wharf. It will be remembered that tbe Wellington arrived here from London on April 2nd With a cargo of general merchandise. After putting out part of her cargo, she sailed on April 23rd for Napier, to load frozen mutton, grain, &c, for Home. She remained there till the sth inst., by which time she had taken In the whole of her cargo and was waiting for some 200 tons of coal for her freezing engines, which was to come to hand the next day. On June sth the southerly gale met by the Tarawera, which was experienced here, but with much more violence on the East Coast of the North Island, came on, and the ship began to drag her anchor. Another was put out, but as the ship still continued to drag and had one of her boats washed overboard, Captain Cowan decided to slip his cables and put to sea. This was done, and the ship having obtained a good offing saillwas shortened, but even then the vessel was driven some ninety miles up the coast. The weather having moderated she was headed for Wellington, but before reaching there a strong north-west sale sprang up, and a course was shaped for Lyttelton, where shearrived as above. The Wellington has now lost three anchors and cables at Napier, as during the storm which broke the Cook Strait cables one of her cables parted, The second one, however, held good, and the ship was enabled to ride out the Kale. As may be supposed, Captain Cowan has no very exalted opinion of Napier as a port. His ship will refit and take m her coals here, making this her final port.
