RUGBY UNION.
The ordinary general meeting of the Canterbury' Rugby Union was held at Warner's Hotel last night. There were present Messrs G. Harris (in the chair), T. S. ;MarBhall, J. S. Hawkes, W. G. Garrard, W. A. Cooke,- W. Johnson, C. Croxton, F. D. Kesteven, H. V. Styche, H. Frost, T. L. Smith, E. G. Hawkes, T. Reese, W. Allardyce, F. West (Secretary) and Dr. Moorhouse. Mr G. Harris was appointed to the vacancy which had ' occurred on the SelectiouCommittee, caused by the resignation of the Rev. J. Hoatsom- The question came up for discussion as to whether the experiment tried on the 30th May in tho Senior Matches, of substituting touch judges for umpires, should or should not be continued throughout the season. The matter was considered at some length, and correspondence was read concerning it, after which it was unanimously resolved, on tho motion of Dr. Moorhouse, that Captains should be recommended to use touch judges in Senior Matches. The motion was also made to apply to the Junior Flag matches, though the members were not as unanimous in" this respect. Mr Garrard mentioned that at the meeting of Secretaries a match was arranged between Merivale and Addington Thirds. The Captain of the latter wrote on Wednesday that he could not fulfil his engagement with Merivale, yet he, in Thursday morning's paper, published the same'team to play another Club. The Union deprecated suCh conduct, and in order to arrive at an accurate position of affairs resolved that the Secretary of the Addington Club be asked to reply to Mr Garrard's statement. The question was asked, if the match Can-' terbury College v Addington could count in the championship, since the latter had only played one match, in which they were defeated, and then retired. While some felt that the match.should be declared null and void, .others considered that. if the match were upheld a point each should be added, as by default, to the other competing Clubs. After some discussion and a division, it was resolved to strike out the Addington fixture. Mr Marshall brought before the meeting a suggestion which had been made for the Rugby Union making use Of Lancaster Park. It was eventually decided by eight votes to seven to take the Park, provided satisfactory terms can be arranged, and Messrs Garrard, Smith, and West* were appointed a sub-Committee to interview Mr A~ M Ollivier on the subject, and report at a special meeting to be held at 5 p.m. today. ■
