Falls of snow have taken plaoe in various parts of England. OBITUARY. Lord Edward Cavendish ia dead. His death was due to influenza. [Lord Edward C-vehdish, youngest son of the Duke of Devonshire, and M.P. for Derbyshire West, was private secretary to Earl Spencer when Lord Lieutenant, 1873-74. He was educated at Trinity, Cambridge. He had been in Parliament from'lß6_-68 for East Sussex, and from 1880----85 for North Derbyshire. THE CHINESE IN CANADA. Ottawa, May 19. The Canadian Trades Congress passed a resolution urging the Government to prohibit Chinese from pursuing certain avocations which brought them into competition with European tradesmen, but Sir John McDonald, the Premier, refused to entertain the suggestion on the ground that the capitation of the Chinese waa sufficient to prevent them becoming a source of danger to European workmen. THE NEWFOUNDLAND BLOCKADE RUNNERS. St. John's, May 19. The trial of the crews of the vessels which succeeded in running the blockade in connection with the enforcement of the Bait Act came off today, and resulted in their acquittal. Received May 20th. I.SO *.__ SERIOUS MAHOMMEDAN RIOT. London, May 18. Advices come from Otadaugah (?) of a serious Mahommedan riot, whioh ia said to have teen started by some of the inhabitants under the pretence of protecting a mosque. The mob was dispersed by the police, but not before one constable had been lulled and many of the rioters seriously injured.
