AUCKLAND, May 15. Mr Buckhurat of Whangarei haa been elected member of the Board of Education in place of D. Goldie. At a meeting of members of the Auckland Agricultural, Pastoral and Industrial Association to-day it was recommended that Professor Thomas of Auckland University College be appointed with Mr McLean to make enquiry into the cause of the disease prevailing amongst sheep -on the East Coast.
As the City Council have received further applications from leaseholders for reduction* of rent, they have rescinded the resolution which they passed asking that the Order-in* Council declaring the Council subject to the provisions of the Public Bodies' Powers Act be revoked.
WESTPORT, May 15. The body of James Mitchell, one of the two young men missing since Wednesday, the 6th inst., was found in the Buller River this morning. The body was quite naked. So far no trace has been found of Joyce, the other missing man. Both were single and residents of Charleston.
The Hinemoa arrived early this morning to coal. She had on board twelve convict* on their way to Wellington Gaol from Milford Sound. The Hinemoa left at 3 p.m. INVERCARGILL, May 15. At a special meeting of the Land Board to-day Mr J. Spence, Chief Surveyor and Commissioner, who has been ordered to Westiand, intimated that he had intended to retire from the service. Speeches very complimentary to Mr Spence were made by the members of the Board and the opinion expressed that the action of the Government was ill-advised.
