The quantities given include beef and lambs, represented by their equivalent' in sheep. The largest shippers are the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, which exported 342,328 carcases of mutton last year. Messrs Nelson Bros. The exceptionally dry weather in the southern island may interfere with the estimated output ot frozen mutton, hut it U expected that the export from the North Island will be fully maintained. Hitherto there has bean a difficulty in providing snipping convenience tor tue trade, but that will soon be a thing of the put. In order to provide proper storage for the mutton on arrival in Eugland, Messrs Nelson Bros, are erecting a large establishment clo*e to London acted up with the latest refrigerating and coolin« uiacbinery. Msdsiis Wilsox and Sons had a big day oa Saturday ja<*t at thu Farmers Saleyards Lichliold street, but luiugs wore a oic top>y turvey. Buyers tor poultry w«re noc uumerous nor lively. The fact is an attempt is being made to get our cliicUeus beluw freezing puiut by those interested iv ttie trude, aud J44t as they accomplish their parpjse of getting them for they will have nothing to get, for, like the Frenchman's horse, as soon as he learned to'live wituou.. food he disappeared, aud so will the cuickeu trade. It is the obi story of oppression, and we must strike. Prices paid at our yard* were —2-j auu 2s 3d for bens, nothiug less; roosters, the uulk of tbeitt went at 2s Ud to 3i 6i; ducKs kuociied. olf at 2s6ita3i lid, out ouiy a few at tlie latter price. The demand for crossbred ewws and good store lambs was arm, though we think prices ruled a shade lower. SoundmoutUed ewes brought from 7s 9d to Us 6d, aged ewes from 3s 9d to 5s Ud; good htsalthy lambs realiaed from 7s to Q*, according to condition, medium 4s 6d to 6i; meiluo wethers up to s*. 4d, merino ewes 2s 6d to 54; mixed sexes 10s to 10s o* J, forward four-tooth wethers 13s 3d, do halfbred 11s (id. There was, as we. expected, a rash of fat sheep, following the 2l.trgo values obtained last we*k on uccouubof the small entry. The prices obtained were 040*0 satisfactory, but they were certainly from Is to 2s below the previous week. We sold a small line of .fat merino wethers from Mr L. White's flakaia estate at from ISs Ud to 233, we fancy the latter price is the highest obtained for this class of shaep for many years, they were purchased by Messrs Hopkins and Co. and, Mr H. S. Harris, aud were certainly' wonderful specimens of this breed. .The crossbred wethers from the same estate realised from 18s Ud to 18s. There was an unusual supply of good loerinoa, which realised from 10s o\i. to 13s, crossbred wethers prime 13i to lbs, ewes 12s to 15s, aged ewes 9s to 12s; inferior quality was somewhat neglected. There was » good supply of fat lambs, and for prime quality satisfactory prices were obtained. brought from 10s 0d to 14s, inferior 7s to Us. The fat cattle market was auaply supplied, but wo fancy business was more brisk than of late and 'a shade better values were obtaiued. Best beef In ought Ids per lOOlbs; medium and £40 cows 15s tki. The store cattle market was ageia inactive, and dairy cows in full profit were to be purchased ac lower rates than of late. Pigs sold ut a reductiou on former quotations, all classes euiferiug to the same exCeut. . . Privately during the week we have placed a considerable number of store sheep, breedlug ewes and lambs at' satisfactory values. Muss us J. R. King and Co. report for the week ending 23th February ou the live stock, grain and produce markets:— The entries ou Saturday last were the largest we have had for some weeks past. Every available pen in every department was well tilled. Buyers attended in good numbers, and lines in deinaud were well competed for. Strong store pi.scs suitable for stubblers were eagerly sought after, aud.realised to good advantage. Porker* and sows in pig aud with litters tiud a ready sale ana ac prices that must be considered highly satisfactory to vendors. vVeaners, however, are not selling so well as they did sosne little time back. Poultry sol 1 exceedingly weil considering the unusually large supply that was brought forward, supplies do not now affect their value to the same extent that they aid some years.ago, thanks to the demand created by the increased passenger traffic going on between this colony, Australia, ana the United Kingdom, it also speaks volumes for the character of the birds brought into our market when companies like the Union Steamship Company aud the N.Z. Shipping Company providors select tnis market tor getting the necessary supplies of poultry for their boats. Horses—The entries were not large, nor was the demand great. Horses of sterling quality nud favor, and are readily disposed of, but inferior sorts are difficult to place. We sold a line of 280 largefrained four-tooth three-quart erbred wethers iv fair condition at 13s 3d ; also a line of 250 four-tooth quarterback wethers at 11s Bd, both lines being from the Cashmere Estate; sound mouth crossbred ewes broughc 7s Od to 10s, aged do, 4s 6d to 9-*; merino ewes, 3-s 7d ; crossbred lambs, 3s 4d CO °4; two-tooth crossbreds, 94 to Hβ; four, six, and eight tooth merino wethers in good condUiou, 5s 4i; four-tooth crossbred, wethers, 11s Gd to 13s 3d. Fat sheep —An average supply numerically was pruned, among tuetn several beautiful fines of sheep, most notably two pens of phenomenal merino wethers, which were secured by two of our leading butchers at 18s and 23* per head respectively. Merino wechers were in plentiful supply. The sale opened well, bat competition flagged towards tho latter end, though highly satisfactory prices were all through. We sold for Culverden Estate, 00 halfbred wether* at 15s, 66 do at 13s lid to 14* 6d, 40 do at 13j 6d, 60 halfbred ewes at 12•» 10d to 13s, 70 do at 12s 0d to 12s 8d; for Buccleuch Estate, 103 halfbred wethers at 14s 4d tol4sßd, 70 halfbred ewes at 13s 3d to 13s 8d j for Cashmere Estate, a line of crossbred wethers at 14s Bd, and some nice half bred wethers at 12s lid. Fat Lambs— A large entry of fairly good quality and weight. Freezing demands üb-jorbed all fit for factory, ana butchers were in consequence made to pay severely for good staff. There was the usual liberal display of scores throughout the pens. We sold for clients from 10s 7d to 14s, freezers made 10s 6d to 14s, and light weights from 6s 6d to 9-> 6d. Fat Cattle—Beef vendors had to face a declining market, which was weakened still more by a large entry, a portion of which may be classed as really prime. We have to record a drop of Is per 1001b*, and quote first quality at 16s to 17s per lOOlbs. Store Cattle—A fairly good yard euabled graziers to secure a few head of young cactle, and some cows capable of being made into beef. In the dairy pens anything good was well competed for, and the market was certainly an improvement on that of the previous week. Pigs— There wa9 a decided lack of animation in the pig trade, and a small entry was somewhat harshly treated by buyers. Stores are much easier. District Sales—At the Leeston Sale' yards on 27th ultimo a fair entry of sheep was yarded, also a moderate supply of pigs and cattle. Farmers were iv good attendance and competed freely for sheep, all of which changed bunds at top values. Pigs were less enquired for than the previous sale. Cattle—Fresh sorts were in good demand. At the Tinwald Saleyards on 3rd inss. the largest entry of the season was yarded, viz., about 11,000, including several lines of excellent sheep. A very large attendance was present, including big buyers from the South, who made things merry for useful young crossbred*. Prices ruled as follows:—Twotooth crossbreds 9s, 10s, 11s 6d, to 12s 6d; four and six-tooth do., 13-* Id; crossbred lambs, 8s to 9a 10d ; cull do. 4s to 6d: souud-inouth crossbred ewes, 9s, 10s 3d, aged do 5s to 8s; do merino ewes, Is 3d to 3s9d. Privately we have placed during the week 1000 freezers at current rates, and several lines of merinos at good values.
Mr F. C. Tababt reports on the live stock market for the week ending sth March as follows:—The total number of stock yarded at the Addington Yards
comprised 14,978 sheep and lambs, 384 head of cattle, and 296 pigs. Fat Cattle— About 190 head were brought forward for the week's supply, and, being in excess of trade requirements, a decrease in values on last week's prices had to be accepted to effect sales. In many instances vendors were not disposed to accept the prices offered, consequently a good many were turned oat unsold. Best bullocks made from £6 :to £7 7a, medium : and light weights £4 13s upwards; best cows and heifers £5 5s to £612s 6d, medium and inferior £2 10a upwards. Store Cattle— This department has relapsed into its old apathetic state. Yesterday there was no disposition to speculate, consequently there was but very little business done. A few large well-grown bullocks made £5 5s and £4 ss. and a lice of three-year-old steer* £4 12* 6d, two-year-old heifers making4os to 455. Fat Sheep—There was a full yarding, every available pen being taken up. Sheep throughout the sale sold remarkably well, and every line was cleared. Two small pens of phenomenal merino wethers from Mr Leonard White's Rakaia estate made 23s and 18s 6d respectively, and the crossbreds from the same estate made ISs and 16s. Other lines, beet pens of crossbreds made 13s, 13s 6d, 14s, 14s 6d, 15s to 15a 6d; medium weights, lls 6d to 12* 9d; fat crossbred ewes, 13s to 14s 6d; medium weights, 10s to 12-i 9d; light weigucs, 9e upwards; prime merino wethers, lls 6 J to 13s; medium,' 9s to IO4; small 7s 6d upwards, sales throughout being very satisfactory to vendors. Fat Lambs —There was again a very heavy entry, the whole of which found buyers, freezing weights and quality making 10s, 10s 6a, lls, lls Cd, 12s, 13s, and up to 14s 6d for extra prime heavy weights; trade lambs, 8s to 9s 9d; graziers, 63 upwards. A few shorn lambs from Kaikoura (Seaborne) made from 9s to lls Id. Store Sheep— We had by far the heaviest entry of the season, every available pen and paddock being use of, and lines of every sort and description were on offer. There was a good demand throughout, and a great clearance was effected. Pigs—A J* mall entry compared to the previous .week's supply. They were all cleared at about last week's values.
Sheepskins, Rough Fat, Hide-} and Calfskins—My sales for the week comprise 2623 L skius, 63 bags and packages of rough fat, and about 57 hides aud calfskins.
