GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

As this market- is still in suspense little or no vai iation has taken place since the date of our last Teport. The weaker aspect of the European markets has ii_parted an easier feeling in wheat, and the publication of an unusual surplus in the Victorian crop.* is not encouraging for those who are depending on an enquiry from Australia. The downward tendency in oat* has been arrested by the news of inclement weather in Southland,' and there are many who still consider that this cereal will be good property during the present season. Holders of barley are still dubious of the future, but as the harvest progresses it becomes more apparent that our surplus will fall very far short of the average. So far, very little ryegrass seed has been offering; presumably farmers are too busy harvesting their grain, to come to town. Showery weather on the Peninsula has delayed cocksfoot cutting somewhat, and no transactions of any consequence have yet been made public; reliable quotations therefore, cannot be given. The Home enquiry for butter shows.sigus of subsiding with the advance of the season ; but cheese continues to have fair attention for shipment. Continued dry weathej, while adverse to root crops, is giving farmers a favourable opportunity to secure their grain in excellent condition, and already a large proportion has been cut and stacked.
