[PKB 7BSSS ABBOCIiLTION.] Beoelv<fd February 3rd, 10.25 a.uu London, February 2. Dr. Plumptre, Dean of Wells, is dead, ffitat 69.

The Very Rev. Edmuad HayesFlumptre, D.D., Dean of Wells, born Augast Bth, 1821, was scholar of the University College, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. (double first-lass) in 1844, aa M.A. Iα 1817. He became a Fellow of Braeenose College in 1814. He was appointed Chaplain at King's College, London, in 1847, Professor of Pastoral Theology there in 1858, Prebendary ol St. Paul's and Professor of the Exegesis of the Mew Testament in 1834, He was assistant preacher at Lincoln's Inn from 1851 till 1858; select preacher at*, Oxford 1851-8, 1864-6, and 1872-3, and Boyle Lecturer in 1886-7. In 1860 he was presented by the Archbishop of Canterbury to the rectory of Pluckfcy in Kent, and In 1873 he became exchange vicar of Blckley in that county. Dr. Plumptre was for four years one of the Old Testament Company of the Committee of Bevlsers of the Authorised Version of the Bible appointed by Convention. He was Grlnfleld Lecturer on the Septuagint at Oxford, examiner in the School of Theology at Oxford, and Principal of Queen's College, Harley street, and he was installed Dean of Wells in succession to the late Dean Johnston, December 21st, 1881. In 1875 he received the honorary degree of D.D. from the University of Glasgow. He was the author of a large number of theological works, and was also a contributor to many of the leading magazines of his day.

Frederick Schwatka, American explorer, was bora at Galleno, Illinois, September 29th, VW. fie graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point In 187 L He subsequently studied law, and was admitted to the oar In 1875. He then took up the study ot medicine, and received his degree iv New York in 1078. In June, 1878, he sailed for the Arctic regions in command of the Franklin search party, which returned in September, 1830, having discovered and boiled many of the skeletons of Sir John Franklin's lost party and cleared apmach of the mystery that had shrouded their fate.
