SYDENHAM AFFAIRS.
TO TH? EDITOS OF THE PBE3S. Sm,—As s Sydenham ratepayer I ttroDglv protest against the system that the model borough Councillors have fallen into by paying their workmen for that which they have not performed from fauds that belong to the ratepayers, and not the Councillors, If they wish to pay the workmen oat of their owe pocket, let them do so, bat there is a very old saying to endeavour to lie just before yon are generous. These gentlemen show tbeirliberality at the expense of the ratepayers. One Councillor showed Ms generosity a short time ego by granting the workmen Labor Demonstration Day their fall pay. Now another ConncUlor proposes that they shall he paid Christmas Now, Sir, it'a a, fact that cannot be
denied the Sydenham Borough Ccuactt' workmen receive far higher wages than are paid by any local body, either in Chrisfcchurcn or Its surroundings. I believe in every man being paid a fair day's pay for a xatr day's work when it has been performed. If there was the same amount of consideration taken towards the ratepayers as to the workmen our rates would be considerably reduced. I know from my own personal knowledge many men out of employment with large families which takes them ail their time to hold their little property Great praise ia due to the Chairman (Mr Booth), and also to Mr Gledhill for the firm stand they made against such wilful extravagance of public monies. By inserting the above you will greatly oblige.—Yours, &c, A Sydenham Ratepayer.
