ASHBURTON.

The Installation of the Mayor of Ashburton took place at noon yesterday, at tbe Borough Council Chambers. There was a full attendance of Councillors, and , no leas than seven ex-Mtoorgwere present, together with Mr A', j&,; 'SBtw^.'i; Jffir W. Steward, MvH.K./Mr R. Mdrray, Sergeant Moller, and a number of others. The retiring Mayor (Mr D. Thomas) made brief mention of the principal works that had been carried oat during his term of office. He then asked the company to join him in a glass of wine, atad drink to the health of the Mayor elect (Mr Hugo Friedlander). The speaker paid a high compliment; to the incoming Mayor for the seal and ability he had always brought to bear on matters connected with the welfare of the borouah. He then handed over to the new Mayor the keys, seal, and documents pertaining to the office. The health of the newly-installed Major was then drank with much enthusiasm. The newly-installed Mayor suitably acknowledged the compliment that had beenpaid him, and intimated the course he intended to pursue during his term of office. In proposing the "Jubilee Clock," coupled with the name of the maker (Mr Robert Murray), special reference was made to the very excellent workmanship that Mr Mutray had put into the town clock, and also to the fact that it was the first large turret clock that had been made in the South Island* It might be mentioned that Mr Hugo Friedlander has on two previous occasions occupied the Mayoral chair, having been elected to that position in 1880 and again in 1881.
