RANGIORA.

The annual meeting of the,Raugiora Borough Council was held yesterday afternoon.' Present—The Mayor (Mr S. R. Good); Crs. Saasom, -Cane,* Stephens, Ivory, Wright, Keir and Jennings. Several burgesses were also present. The Mayor, who had been re-elected, made the necessary declaration, and then thanked the burgesses for his re-election. He had not intended to accept office for a third time, but he had been' pressed to come forward, and was extremely gratified at the result of the polling. There were not many works of importance being done in the borough to which it was necessary to refer, but be thought the laying down of asphalt and tbe construction of kerbing and channelling should be continued as fast as funds would permit. He hoped it would be some time before it would be found necessary to raise a loan for any work in the borough unless for the establishment of gasworks or some other reproductive work. There was very little for the Council to do that could not be paid for out of tbe ordinary revenue of the borough, and by spending the money judiciously even, an overdraft might be avoided. There was one object in which he felt some interest, and that was a public clock for the town. The Post Office contained a tower, but without a clock, and one would be found of great convenience to the people of the Borough. As he doubted whether the Council funds could legally be spent on the work, he hoped a public subscription would be rabed to purchase a clock, and he would be pleased to contribute the sum of £25 towards the object, provided it was erected during his present year of office. He thought it probable the Post Office tower would have to be altered to make it suitable, but. the' Government should be . asked to assist. He;thanked the Councillors for the assistancethey_ad rendered him during the first two years, and trusted be should be accorded the. same for the ensuing term. (Applause). . All.the Councillors present congratulated the Mayor on his reelection, and promised to - render him all assistance Ebssible to conduct the business of the orough successfully. Messrs |H. Boyd, G. F. H. Richards, and 3S. *H. King also addressed their congratulations, and a discussion took place on the water schemes of the. Council, in which most of those ■ present joined. The meeting - then terminated. •
