THE LABOR BALLOT.

TO THE EDITOR OV THH PRB33. Sra,— Kindly allow mc a small space in your next issue that I may show to my brother Unionists the underhand act which has been practised ia connection* with the proposed ballot in the Union for candidates at the ensuing election. On Wednesday morning last two gentlemen waited on mc as a deputation from the Parliamentary Committee of the Trades and Labor Council, aud asked mc to withdraw my name from the list of nominees, 1 and intimated that Mr C. G. Bae had already done so, in the interest of the Liberal party. I told the deputation that I would consult the gentlemen who had nominated mc and be guided by them, and should they consent I would withdraw, but I would not Insult them by taking the matter into my own hand. I promised to consult my Committee that evening, and that if they would call oh the following morning I would give them my reply. I at the same time tola them that I -eras personally perfectly willing to withdraw if the Union would bring forward a more eligible working man to fill my place. Now Ido noc accuse the deputation of knowingly telling mc * deliberate lie, because I know chat these gentlemen would not betnean themselvot to do so, but Ido say that they have been unwittingly made the tools of some less aprupulous party in bringing ma.the message they did;because 1 saw aud consulted with Mr Kae on the matter, when he told mc that he had neither withdrawn nor authorised anyone to intimate euch a thing on his behalf. Although he had been sounded on the subject and asked to do so, ou the ground that if he did so I wtiuld probably do yd likewise. Now, if the Unions" are to bo made the mere cooli*;ot unscrupulous wirepullers the sooner their real v position is* made known and understood tu© better, so that every honest uneniber may have an oppor- , tunity of .withdrawing from ( such a connection as parliamentary wire pullers. " Gentlemen,—l wish to call your atteation to the fact that the ballot papjera are public property. I myself had a dozen or more handed to mc on Thursday last, and not by any secretary or Unionist. 1 would also point cut that the said ballot papers have been tampered with, ia so far as to strike ouc tbe name of Mr C. G. Bae without his consent or permission. I protest! against such conduct. It is unworthy the name of Unionists; in fact the whole affair is apiece of humbug, and therefore I ignore the whole business. I would also ask what guarantee have you to prevent j bogus ballot papers being sent la or tarn* pered "with * again I—l < am, ge&ttemen, yours truly, — " ■-'■■'■'• •'- ---■■■•■ ■~ '-.■■;-cv ■■«'•: ■■ ■ VDaTTIDJSTKE& | "To the Parliamentary Committee j Trades and Labor Council." j
