TAI TAPU.
An ordinary meeting of this Board was held on May 2nd. Present—Messrs McCartney, Le&thani, (iiltuour, Forbes and Mangles. The KeturninK Officer reported that au election bad been held, and Messrs Forbes and McCartney were elected unopposed. The Clerk reported that che first duty of the Board was to elect a Chairman. Mr Leathern proposed that Mr McCartney be appointed Chairman for the ensuing year. Seconded by Mr Gilmour, and carried. Correspondence was received from the District Engineer for Public Works, that it was the intention of the Government some time since to stop the Halswcll bridge and the south side of the Ahuriri lagoon, but could not now say whether this project shall be carried out. The Clerk was instructed merely to attend to the safety of the bridge for traffic pending the final decision of the Government. Kelative to cleaning main drain, the Clerk reported that owing to cattle passing through at the upper end treading in the cleaning is unsatisfactory, and other steps are necessary to ensure a satisfactory job. It was resolved that this matter be postponed for the present. Correspondence was read— From the South)Waimakariri River Board, instructing the levying of a rate for that body of 7 64th of a penny on class 1, and 504chs of a penny on class 2. To be attended to. Mr Gilmour proposed, seconded by Mr Forbes, and carried— *'That the South Wairaakariri River Board be asked that, as this Board is paying a rate ostensibly v» ith a view to ward on encroachments of the said river, how is it that the river is brought into the district by another public body to the detriment ol ratepayers in the district." It was resolved that steps be taken to acquire a piece of land on the Lake Ellesmere flat, for the purposes of a recreation ground for the Tai Tapu and Lincoln district, and with a view to such object, that his Excellency the Governor be prayed to dedicate about fifty acres of the Kabblt Island iteereatiou Keserve to be vested in this Board. Owing to the Auditors' accounts not being returned from Wellington, the annual meeting of ratepayers was postponed to June sth.
