Friday, Mat 2. [Before Messrs 0. Hardy and W. L. Allan.] The Licensing Act.—The case against A. C. P. Knyvet, licensee of the Cherbsiey Hotel, was resumed. Mr Leatham appeared for the accused. The evidence showed that drunkenness and disorderly conduct was of so frequent occurrence at this hotel that a petition signed by most of the residents in the place, asking for police interference, had been sent in to Sergeant Felton, stationed at Ashburton, who now appeared for the prosecution. After hearing the evidence for the defence the Bench inflicted a fine of £5, and £3 16s 6d costs of witnesses and Court expenses. The defendant was then charged with not keeping his licensed premises up to the standard required. This case was adjourned at the request of accused till Monday, May 19th, accused to pay witnesses' expenses.
