TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS.
Slß,—The British workman has always been considered the true type of laboring manhood, and a true man of this type is never ashamed of his name. " John Brown is my name, and I'm not ashamed of it." This is his style, so that when one sees a letter in the Press signed '* A Working Man," grave doubts naturally arise as to the correctness of the title, or the writer's right to uae it. The letter in your Friday's issue has much the appearance of an election dodge in the interests of someone, for whom the writer is touting, and the working man cry simply a dodge. At any rate, it is an insult to working men generally to have such a title put to such a Working men all over the world have been agitating for shorter hours and longer pay, and were it not for the countenance and assistance their efforts received at the commencement from such men as Messrs Perceval and Beeves, they would have been at the start crushed oat of existence.
A good action or assistance of any kind is of fall value, even though it costs the donor nothing, in conclusion, let mc state the working men of New Zealand as a body have declared themselves in favor of the early closing movement, and that the writer of the article referred to will have fall opportunity of exercising his vote against it if he be so disposed.—Yours, E. Clark, Hon. Secretary N.Z. Early Closing Association.
