AUCKLAND NOTES.
{VBOU OtTB COKBBKPOinHEKT.] . : c r : April 8.; l ■ The firefc day's racing of the— Autumn Meeting drew a very fair attendance to Elleralie. .Lord and Lady Onslow and suite drove oat in a four-in*haod, and j were accompanied by the Hoa. JS. Mittshel-"; son. Amongst the visitors from Kapler were Messrs S. H. Gollan, G. Ellisj Caul- ! toii, Profflct and J. Mann; MrE. !YtuUe r also came up from among theiockeys were W, Clifford, flickey and Buddicombe. Speculation on the totalisator was fairly brisk, the scm of 1X4,787 being passed through the machines. Last year 42697 went through on ohe first day but the races were held on a Saturday. . An unfortunate contreimnpt occurred in the opening event, the Tradesmen's Handicap. The trouble occurred through the whole of the jockeys thinking Mr Casts, had dropped his flag. Such was not the case, for the.flag .was never unrolled.' Lochqess won with ridiculous ease on each, occasion, Quadrant, who hung at- the post on the first occasion, being second.' U looked after the disputed- race as if a y squabble would ariee outside the paddock.' Among those "who we're greatly annoyed/ was Mr McK'.nnon, owner of Aronoei was on the big side, but nevertheless she won the Champagne Stakes easily-" at the finish. Hiss Cole had the best of the start, and flattered her backers tip the straight was reached,- where ■ Captain
Russe&'e filly soon cut her down. Our I two-year-olds are a very poor lot now that j Mary is dead. Donald proved to be " the . rod inpivkle" for the hurdles that many thought; he won easily from the Napier owned Darnley; Donald has lately won several races on the fiat in and near Wane&nui, and will ba well-known, to *• Spectator." The horse Iβ half-brothje* to Titokowaru, and was raced In Mr Q. H. Gibson's name, but those resident here that provide the sinew* of war for Mr J. Bae'a stable, I understand, own the. horse. Cissy ran disappointingly in the TradesHandicap and waa flighty at post. This mare never seems to settle down, and some travelling, I fancy, would i do her good. Witlf Cissy scratched for the Easter Handicap, her stable companion, Hilda, was made a slightly better favourite than ! Patchwork. The race ia easily described. Rataplan made the ronniug for a mile;; whea he gave, way, to Patchwork ? but Hilda, who was always in a good position, came-through the field at the turn for home and ran down the straight an easy winner by two lengths. Leorina and Patchwork fought a good battle for second honours from the distance, ending in favour of the first named; it was a treat to see the Napier heroine race under weight, and she could have won at any part of the journey. Wright has the mare looking one mass of muscle. The time the race was run in was wonderfully good, viz., 3tnin 39sec. r It? was & shame to have started Raglan, the horse is suffering with hi 3 feet, and he ran last aU the way. . m , lii the Two-Year-Old Stakes, won by The Dreamer.Leolantis was raced by Mr George Wright, who, during the morning, purchased the colt from Mr John Lynch for 500 guineas. The name of the owner has not transpired. ■ ;-, Tirailleur c:ot over the Leger aistance, aljne at a strong pace owing to Cissy and Quadrant being scratched, nevertheless tne half of the stake that Mr Gollan takes will ba a fair sum. - "J The second, day's racing was to come otc to-day, but heavy rain set in last night aud continued to-day. The stewards Uai no alternative but to postpone the meeting. - The jumper Voicauo hae again gone wrong. Cyqical races in the name of B. Yjiille, the Wellington bookmaker. At the Auckland Baring Club's Meeting he did not sport silk, on Monday. A private cablegram received here, statee that Titokowaru was Jtreaten in the Hurdle race at Rand wick on Saturday.; A bit of a disappointment for his party. J. R. Scott, of Maori Football fame, has been licensed by the Auckland Tattersall s Club as a bookmaker. Wednesday.. , The steeplechaser Messenger having been! purchased on behalf of a Victorian sporcsmaa ia to, be shipped to Sydney this even-, ing by the Rotbmahana. When the norse was sold one of the stipulations was that' delivery was given on the Bth (the day on which the Autumn Steeplechase was ran), b"ut owing to the races being postponed his; former owners lose the chance of annexing the stakes, as the parties who now own the. horse require him to be shipped to Australia at once.
The resolutions passed by the A.J.C. re pony racing and trotting events have to again come up for confirmation in May.
