RUSSELL'S FLAT.

A variety of causes have operated against a good grain harvest in this portion of Canterbury. A succession of gales, then a plethora of water, had a bad effect on a lot of the grain sown during June, July, and August, tixceptiug a few paddock* the growth is thin and weak, giving a scarcity of straw as well as grain. Messrs Robertson and Wallace are more fortunate, and will reap an average crop. Oats are the most commonly grown, but with the land more worked, and with lime and other mauures coming into vogue, good returns oi wheat may ue relied upon in the future. I estimate wheat at 16, and oats 23 bushels par acre. We are yearly putting more lava under sheep roots, ana these are now doing well.
