SPRINGFIELD.
Within a radius of five miles a more than usually large percentage of land is under grain, oats taking the palm for both quantity and appearance; and, as matters now stand, with a fair weather record, the grower will be on the right side. Mr Cassidy will be near the best with oats, and Mr Kane will be hard to beat in wheat. North-east of the township all the crops are good, and appear noc to have felt the wiuds to the same extent as those lying further south. Apparently more heavy seeding has been the rale all through this district, thus leaving a fair growth after our winged enemies are satisfied. Thi3 pest is strongly represented, although the Road Board, with commendable forethought, was oae of the first of the local bodies within a long stretch that commenced their destruction in the spring. With fine weather to-complete operations, the harvest will be an average one, if not a little above the ordinary ruu. Farmers are keeping abreast of the times by making provision fur sheep feeding during the winter, employing tor this purpose turnips and periodical sowings of rye. Last season my estimate was not far abroad, but I find it a more difficult task this. Oats, however, will turn 28, and wheat 22 to 25, the latter for choice it favorable weather prevails.
