ROAD BOARDS-

RICCARTON.

The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Monday, December 9th, at the office, Fendalton. Present—All the memben and Mr H. J. Hall (Chairman). Ihe following correspondence was read, vi«.: — From MrE. A. Lock, declining to give land from K.S. 330 to widen Recce s road, as the trustees had sold a portion of. the land fronting the said road. From the Selwyn County Council, forwarding cheque foroOs and enclosing the following resolution passed at its last meeting:— That a bonus of £1 be granted for every £2 expended by the Road Boards in the County during the summer montns on the destruction of small birds. The Board having considered the above resolution, it was resolved to vote a sum of £10 for the purchase of small birds , eggs and heads. From Messrs Williams aud Stephens, enclosing catalogue of ironbark timber just yarded. Referred to the Surveyor. From the Property Tax Commissioner, advising payment of the balanceol subsidy for the year ending March, 1889. From Mr Washbourne, requesting permission to take a few loads of gravel froni the pit near the river bed. Granted. From Messrs Wood and Laurie, calling attention to a sale of timber at Little River on the 12th December. From a ratepayer at Addington, regretting his inability to pay his races at present. The Board declined to interfere Iα the matter, as the Collector had received instructions to sue for all outstanding rates. From a ratepayer residing near Papanui, complaining of the .nuisance caused by stray cattle in the neighborhood of Bllgh s road and Bryndwr. It was resolved to call the ranger's attention to the matter. From the Selwyn County Council, asking for payment of the amount due by this district on account of hosDicals and charitable aid as contributions are long overdue. The Clerk produced a statement showing the estimated receipts and expenditure on hospital and charitable aid in the district for the current year: and after due consideration it was resolved to pay £100 on account, and the balance on receipt of the subsidy accruing. From the Secretary to the Kailway Reform League, Auckland, inviting the cooperation of the Board. It was resolved that the Clerk acknowledge receipt. Tenders were received for gravelling roads as advertised, and the following were accepted—Jacfcson'e road and boulders for Harewood road, H. Henry; Ruddenklau s road, Jacob Wicks; Kalapoi and Prebbleton junction road, D. Murphy. Ihetenders received for boulders for the West Coast road were considered too high, and consequently not accepted. Complaints having been made that a street In the above township had been fenced across, it was reeolved that the offender be given seven days to remove the fence, or the Board will take proceedings under the Public Works Ace, The {Surveyors repert was read and approved. Tne Rate Collector's report was read showing the amount of rates outstanding, and it wae resolved to take the necessary proceedings for recovery. Accounts having been passed for payment, the Board adjourned. AVON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on the 2nd instant. Present—Messrs Blake (Chairman), Cochrane, Homer, KHag, aud Patterson. The Surveyors report was read and considered, ine Executors of Messrs R, and G. Rhodes wrote in reference to the dedication of a new road in Marshland. The Clerk to reply that on completion of the usual requirements the Board would take over the road. The Inspector of Police s report in reply was read re removal of houses to New Brighton and leaving the same on the public road, causing a nuisance. Resolved—That the Clerk write to the contractor in question, Informing him that the offence was not to be repeated. Messrs Purden and Clark saw the Board reformation of Tomes street, and having retired, It was resolved,— r'l'hat on receipt of amount guaranteed the work would be put in hand, such guarantee not to include the cost of dedication, &c. Mr Farquhar waited on the Board on account of rates paid by him, tendering a letter in reply from the Property Tax Commissioner, stating he hadibeen charged for an acre of land he did not own, when he was informed the proper time to render objections was before the Board of Reviewers. The Clerk was instructed to look into the matter and arrange. The Surveyor wee instructed to inspect the Lower Styx road, with power to ace. Resolved—That the South Waimakariri River Board be asked fora contribution towards making a new road" In lieu of the portion lately washed away by the Waimakariri, near White's bridge. With regard to the dispute between Mr .Roberts and the Collector re payment of rates. The Board, after careful consideration of the evidence, unanimously decided that Mr Roberts must be laboring; under a misapprehension and that hia evidence was contradictory, and instructed the collector to take proceedings to collect the rates forthwith. It was stated that a number of dogs in the district were stul unregistered, when it was resolved to instruct the Dag Ranger to pay a visit of inspection throughout the district and to take the necessary proceedings against all offenders. Messrs Ryan and Corboy s tenders were accepted for delivery of clay and shingle on the Canal Reserve road and the meeting terminated.

ASHLEY.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held on December sth. Present—Messrs W. C. Nicholls (Chairman), Feather, O'Halloran, and Whatman. The Surveyor was directed to carry out the resolutions re shingling, repairs on all the roads in the district, all clay cuttings to be shingled. Tenders for the following works to be called for:—Bridtte on Cone s road, near Perrott's; bridge on Barker s road, near Armstrong's; shingling about eleven chains hill road, Loburn, itowai, Watertable, Section I, between Boundary road and Okuku and Gray, and the unlet sections, gorse clearing In reply to application from Mr A. Kates, the Board resolved to make the required improvement on the cutting out of the Gray, but decline taking any steps to eradicate gorse on private property. Mr Whatman 8 permission to take tne shingle required from the roai to Stony Creek was received; and on the motion of Mr Feather a vote of thanks was unanimously accorded to him. Mr Feather's suggested improvement to drain through reserve 1854 to be carried out. Tenders were accepted for Boundary road to Stony creek, gorse clearing section IV., drain between White Rock and Gowai Creek. Accounts amounting to £97 0s 3d were passed for payment.
