GLADSTONE.
Mr Gladstone has had a narrow escape from being involved in a railway accident. A bridge near Hawarden fell immediately after the special train conveying Mr Gladstone had crossed it.

Mr Plunkett, a well-known Irish magistrate, is dead.
AUSTRALIA AND FEDERATION.
Lord Sherbrooke favours Australian federation as the precursor of Imperial federation.
Sir A. Clarke, speaks at the close of the Earl of Carnarvon's lecture on Tuesday upon tha mutual duties of England and Australia with regard to defence. He considers these duties consist of readiness to expel tbe French and also Germans from tbe,Pacific, and even to annex Java.
THE LATE MR WESTGARTH.
Received December 9th, noon. ; London, December 7. The will of the late Mr Westgarth has been proved at under £145,000 lie leaves £2100 to charities and £18,000 in other minor legacies.

Received December 9th, 12.30 p.m. A prospectus has beea published of the New Zealand Petroleum and Iron Syndicate, Tarauaki; capital £35,000. FRENCH MINISTER OF MARINE. Paris, December 8. A Supreme Naval Council is being created to control the Minister of Marine. CATHOLIC BANK. New York, December 8. 1 The New York Herald asserts that a Catholio Bank is being formed, under tbe auspices of athe Vatican, with a capital of twenty millions. The headquarters are to be in America, with branches in Italy, London, Australia, and everywhere. The Duke of Norfolk is mentioned as President of the English branch. The statement is looked upon with doubt, and is not believed to be authentic.
THE EX-EMPEROR OF BRAZIL.
Lisbon, December 8.
Dom Pedro, ex-Emperor of Brazil, has arrived at Lisbon, He denies that he abdicated, and repudiates the allowance grauted by the Republican Government.
