CANTERBURY AND UNION ROWING CLUBS.

On Saturday afternoon a series of boat races arranged by the Canterbury and Union Bowing Club, was rowed on the estuary. A fresh breeze prevailed from the north-east and made the water very choppy, otherwise the course would have been a very good one. The practice the men got, however, will be of service to them, as all their training has to be done on the placid water of the Avon. There was a considerable attendance of spectators, many being ladies. The hew shed erected by the Union Rowing Club was found very convenient as a dressing room. The final heat of the Canterbury Union Trial Pairs was won by Turrell's crew after an exciting race with Lightband's crew, the winners being first past the post by a quarter of a length. The four-oared race for the Ten-guinea Cup presented by Mr J. Gould, President of the Union Rowing Club, resulted In a somewhat easy win for Mason's crew. Daly's crew won the four-oared race for the Cup of the President of the Canterbury Rowing Club. The course for the Pairs was a mile in length, for the larger crews a mile and a hall. For the events rowed under the auspices of the Canterbury Rowing Club Mr E. M. Boulton acted as Starter and Mr J, R. Evans as Judge, and for the Union Rowing Ciub Mr J. Gould (President) was Judge and Mr F. D. Kesteven Starter. The following are the results :— C.X.C. trial pairs. First Heat. Dee—H. Lightband stroke, and F. W. Johnston bow, F. C. Cummins cox 1 Don—JS. W. G. Strange stroke, W. Devenish bow, L. Hobbs cox ... 2 Venus—H. W. Strouts stroke, F. E. Wright bow, F. E. Trenchard cox ... 3 The winners led from the start and passed the post first by four lengths. Strouts' boat was swung round by the stream at the start and lost two lengths, and finished a dozen lengths behind Strange, who lost some ; wav when nearing home through his oar becoming unshipped. After going 150 yards Lightband went to the front, but TurTell stuck closely to him, however, gradually wore him down, and won by a quarter of a length. U.R.C. president's cup. : Thetis—G. H. Daly won a good race by a length from Laurie, who was the same distance in front of Macbeth, Speight losing! third place by two feet.
