Business in the import market during the past week has been of a moderate character, no transactions having passed which call for special notice. Orders are being taken freely in town and country for delivery on the first of next month. The arrival of the Bio Loge and Gazelle from Mauritius has relieved the market of the pressing want for sugar. Heavy eales have been effected at prices ranging up to £2910s d.p. for snowdrops, and from £28 to £2810s for good white crystals. Fine yellow crystals have met with a brisk demand at up to £'i 3 10s d.p.; brown at from £25 to £26. In dried fruits frequent sales of currants, sultanas, and Valenclas have passed at last quotations. Elemea are rather scarce, and, pending the arrival of newfruit,readily fetch 5d toS&d. Figsatfrom 6s 6d to 8s 6d according to weight, and the usual Christmas lines meet with a good sorting. up business. Regular trade sales of jams are passing, and stocks are likely to run low before the new season's is in hand. Candles are firm at late rates, the demand is slower with the lengthening of the days. Kerosene sells in trade parcels at from Is 9d to 2s, according to brand. Rice meets with ordinary sales at £22. Sago and tapioca have usual sales at 2Jd to 2fd. A better enquiry is being felt for tinned fish, which are without Quotable change. Hops have moderate sales only at Is 3d to Is 4d. Vestas, IOOO's are in short supply and are readily quitted at from 6bs, 250's from 17s 6d to 18s 6d. Keiller's marmalade at from 7s Bd. The several agents for vinegar report an increasing demand at regular rates. Fine salt sells at from £5. Coarse salt, soda crystals, and whiting are without quotable change. Woolpacks have frequent sales at late rates. Galvanised iron is firm at £23. Cement sells in trade parcels at from 18s to 19s In Chrlstchurch. Bulk ale is in better reSuest, Worthington's at usual rates. iottled ale and stout of favorite brand 3, as Read's Dog's Head, Porter's Bulldog, and-Poster's meet with Improved demand. Brandy meets with trade sales only. Hennessy's is quoted at 37s 6d i.b. per case. Scotch whisky has ordinary business. A fair trade demand exists for port wine and sherry at from 8s 6d to 12s 6di.b. There is an improved inquiry for clarets. Champagne is dull of sale.
