LANCASTER PARK C.C. v UNITED CANTERBURY C.C.

This match was continued on Saturday, at Hagley Park, and now promises to furnish a really good finish. The wicket was in splendid order for batting, and as the ground generally was very fast it was expected that the Lancaster Park team would be able to master the opposing bowling, always rather weak, and make a bold bid to raise their score to 274, the total made by the United on the previous Saturday. Marshall and Cuff scored 9 off the first over, and then, three rune later, Guff had the misfortune to be bowled off his legs by a fast ball from Bolleston. Shortly afterwards A. Labatt, who was playing in very good style, was caught at the wickets off a miss hit to leg. DeMaus then joined Marshallfrfter a few overs, during which he was not at all at home. Some really good cricket was shown by both batsmen, and it was not till 70 was reached that Marshall was stumped off a slow leg break from R. Harman. Marshall had played a splendid innings for 36, included in which were eight 3'e, mostly obtained by hard off drives. Three wickets then fell in quick succession to B. Harman's slows, but when Wallis joined DeMaus another long stand was made, and by steady cricket ten after ten was scored until at 145 Wallis was smartly taken in the slips by Deßenzy Harman. Wallis had made 29, a most serviceable innings for his side. Shortly afterwards DeMaus , long innings of 54 came to an end in the same manner as had Marshall's. He had played sound cricket, and seemed quite at home to all the bowlimg except that of Harman, which he might have punished severely if he had not let so many off balls pass without attemping any hitting. .1 ust as all hope of saving the follow on had begun to disappear, L'ant and Ridley hit out freely, and soon had the fielding side in difficulties again. This partnership produced over 50 runs, and both men are to be congratulated for their plucky play. Ridley scored 31 in an attractive style, and made some good hits. North, the last man, did not survive many overs, the innings closing for 211, a much larger total than was expected M the fall of the sixth wicket. Cant carried out his bat for a good innings of 27. The United bowling was not of a very high order. R. l>. Harman was most successful, and it was unfortunate for his side that he was handicapped by a bad sprain. Some of the men fielded well all the afternoon, Deßenzy Harman being especially noticeable for his smartness both in stopping the ball and j returning; but several of the team ought to pay more attention to this department if they wish their Club to succeed. The United Club started their second innings most disastrously, three wickets falling for 13 runs during the twenty minutes left for play. This is to be accounted for by the fact that the light had become very bad, full advantage of which was taken by Wilding, who secured three wickets for seven runs. The United I are now 76 runs on, with seven wickets to fall, so the finish of the game should be very interesting. LANCASTER PARK C. C First Innings. G. Marshall, «*•• Tait, bB. Harman.. _ Sβ L, A.
