A REMARKABLE BEGGAR WOMAN.
A curious Scene was presented- at t-& Dublih Police Court the other day of a stalwart constable struggling to raise to the Bench a hamper which taxed his strengtti/for, 16 contained 4g stone of silver and copper coin, aad this was only a part of the treasure which the female searchers found ia the pattered ganaeafca of a woman arrested, the previous evening for begging. Among other unconsidered trifles stowed away among Jher rags were about half a stone of potatoes,- a <n_art of peas, aud a miscellaneous collection of other ' articles. But the hamper of coin was only a fraction oi toe mendicant's wealth. There were |0.--d upon her besides £,283 in . gold. £390 in notes, a Bank deposit receipt fO? £100, and two shares in the MoQSfeh Building Society for £10 and £14. , As.afee -atood when arrested she carried and securities to the amount of £800. How she walked under a^sb_j weight is almost Incdmprehenslbte. • Hs* name is Annie Cooley; she is about £ortyfive years of age, but looks much oljie*', with dishevelled iron grey hair. Ha* account of herself, confirmed by a brother, a respectable artisan, is that her fatoei was a butcher, and grazed in Lucan, en*i the money was left to her by him. At one time she had most of it invested in United States bonds, but they were called in dn4 paid off, and since then, for teas of being robbed, she .carried all her treasury about her, disposed of bo ingealoualj among her wretched clothing that § tijok the searchers and police ©facers mani hours to bring* it all to light. She occupied a room in Poolbeg street, and, it wap stated,, had not undressed for six years She denied, the charge of begging, but« constable deposed that he had seen &$ ask several .persona for alms.. , A cerfcaJhj fiightiness o£ demeanor had also for som* time attracted the attention of tha polio* to her, and when arrested she became very violent and hysterical.
