MR PARNELL AT EDINBURGH,
The freedom of the City of Edinburgh! over which much feeling has been displayed by the Town Council, was presented to Mr Parnell on July -Otb, in the Couaott Chamber, in the presence of over two hundred ladies and gentlemen, specially in vited guests. The proceedings took the form of " a cake and wine, banquet.'* Oft account of the vast crowd assembled at the entrance, barricades had to be erected, and,-on tbe appearance ot Mr Parnell, he was received with enthusiastic cheers and j some. hisses. On entering-the OOUncll Chamber he was welcomed by Bailie Wakot, who—tn the absence of the Lord Provost, who,' with a minority of the Council, fiao refused to take part in the $ro» ceedlngs—presided. In front of the chair was the City sword and mace, and the casket containing the burgess ticket. ■The casket was beautifully wrought (ft silver with thistles and shamrock*, bus the English rose waa wanting. In regard to this it has transpired that in settling upon the distinctive decorative . features, ■which the silver box was to carry, tna Subcommittee resolved that the Ehgiish ro«e should not appear as an en.blen.atfb -lower upon it. .They therefore severed the union of the flowers, and instead of %tm rose, thistle and shamrock being twined as an emblem of the United. Kingdom, the Committee desired that oxi 'the casket there should be only the thistle and tha shamrock- -J£r Parnett; la accepting the honor, dwelt on Ma experiences at the Specie- Commission, {-Emitting that the judges under the terms of the Act could not have acted different!;. Had lie known that the books of theXoy_*J Patriotic League would not have been submitted, he would, never have set - foot within the. doors of the Court, sent Government had .'cloaked <&»; oc»»~ which obtained and. forged letters, but another Govemnjenl 'would not have the same motive for oow cealmgut. , •, ~
