Resignation of the Bishop.—We have been informed that the Bench of Bishops have accepted Bishop Harper's resignation, to take effect on 31st March next, and that the Bishop of Nelson, as senior Bishop, has instructed the Dean of Christchurch, as commissary, to convene the clerical and lay members of the Synod for the election of Bishop Harper's successor. Th- EnglishMail.—At 10.50 a.m. yesterday the s.B. Wanaka arrived in port from Wellington with the English mail, ex the s s Rimutaka. The Southern portion was forwarded on by the 11.20 train from Lyttelton. Weather Rsport. — Captain R. A. Edwin, of Wellington, telegraphed to Captain Clark, harbormaster at Lyttelton. at 12.50 p.m. yesterday, asfollows: —" N.W. to | W. aud S. gale within next twelve hours ; glass rising." Kaiapoi Borough Council. —Mr P. McSweeny, a candidate for the annual eleotion, has given notice of his retirement from the contest. Athletic Spouts Ground Company.— The annual general meeting of the above will be held at the offices of the Company this afternoon, at four o'clock. Band op Hopb Demonstration. — A l temperance demonstration on a large scale will take place this evening, at the Oddfellows' Hall, Liobiield street. Union Rowino Club. — The annual general meeting of the members of this Club will be held at the Commercial Hotel this evening, at eight o'clock. Supreme Court. —Hiei Honor Mr Justice Denniston held a short oivil sitting yesterday, and also sat in banco. To-day he will sit in Chambers at 10.80 a.m., and take bankruptcy and banco business following. Thh Bland Holt Season. —Owing to the large amount of preparation necessary for the production of Mr Bland Holts opening novelty " The Union Jack," the opening of the season, originally fixed for Monday next, has been postponed until Tuesday. City Election. —A meeting of the Committee of. Mr "V. Harris was held last night at the Royal Hotel, when there was a large attendance, thirty-two members being present. Several apologies for nonattendance were read. After getting through a larg9 amount of business the meeting was adjourned until to-morrow evening, when the Committee will meet to make final arrangements. Papanui Lodge op Oddpkllows.—The j Papanui Lodge, 1.0.0.F.,M.U., held its annual social gathering in the Town Hall on Friday evening. About seventy couples were present. Between the dances several ladies and gentlemen contributed songs. P.G. Bro. Langford as M.C. and Mr Emmett as pianist fulfilled their duties ably, refreshments being supplied by Mrs Homer. In tlle course of the evening P.G. Bro. H. Morgan, in a short speech, thanked all those who had rendered assistance towards the evening's amusement. Waiitakariri Harbor Board. — The members of the Waimakariri- Harbor Board on Monday afternoon proceeded in < the steamer Diamond to the pilot station to inspect the position for the signal (staff.; The acting Chairman and Chairman of the Works Committee and the signal man were unable to be present.' The members, however, formed their ideas upon " the, question, which. iW—I .come before the Board at the next meeting. - Railwayß__ _ Club.—The fourth Cup competition in connection with this Club; was held at the Terminus range on Friday last. Some very good shooting was done, and the. highest scorers are as follows : — Messrs Smart, 83 - Cox, 83 - Loe, 32; Fraser, 32 - Sherwood, 31 • and Ffitch, 31. Musical.'—_he choir of the St. Asaph street Church have decided to give a grand saored conoert, in tha church, on Thursday, the 19th instant. The programme comprises Weber's ".Mass in G," selections by the orchestra, and choruses by the choir—in all about sixty' performers. The solos will be taken,by Miss'A. S. Taylor, Mesdames A., Corrick, and C. M. Gray, and Messrs Puschell, Johnson, and Halley. Mr, Davis Hunt? will accompany, on the organ, and Mr A. Corrick will conduct. The beautiful music of this Mass needs no comment, And, combined with the low price of admission to be charged, should attract a large audience. Queen's Ga»_*_b.---The _mal monthly: parade of the four companies of Queen's Cadets was held last evening, in the South Belt drill shed. Major Newall in command. The following was the parade state -—No. 1 company, 80; Lieut. Drayton j No. 2 company, 84, Lieut. Maule; No. 3 company, oi, Capt. Williams - No. 4 oompany, 40, Lieut. Jones; total, 155. At the close of the parade Major Nawall expressed himself pleased with the conduot and drill of the boys. Tickets were issued to the boys for the social gathering to be held on Tuesday evening, the 17th September. New Zealand Exhibition.-—A meeting of the local Executive Committee will be held this afternoon at the office of Messrs Kinsey and Co. at three o'clock. A circular has been issued by the local Secretary stating that the Honorary Secretary of the Fine Arts Committee has written for a detailed list of what pictures have been selected. Exhibitors are requested to send their pictures to the room last used by the Canterbury Art Society in Cashel street either on Thursday or .Friday, the 19th and 20th instant, between the hours of-10 a.m. and 4 p.m.' The Subcommittee will meet on the following day to select works' for exhibition. Applicants are reminded; that .only works approved by the Sub-: Committee will be admitted, free- others will be charged for. Dunsandxl Cric_*bt Club.—A meeting of the Committee of this Club was held on Saturday evening. Present—Messrs A. Irvine (Chairman), J. S. Robins (Secretary). F- Lill, T. Irvine, G. 8., Sheat, W. Burgess and H. Brown. Mr G. Sheat proposed, Mr F. Lill seconded—"That this Club entertains with favor the proposal made by Mr T. W. Durant, on behalf of the Leeston Club, of establishing a county club, and that Messrs A. Irvine, J. S. Robins and F. Lill be appointed delegates for the same iv the event of a county club being formed." The motion was carried. It wa3 resolved that Mr George Lill's offer of—paddock for play this season be accepted with thanks, also that the general meeting, should be held on Wednesday, September lSfch. Concbbt akd Ball at Rakaia.—The eighth anniversary of the Rakaia Lodge of Oddfellows was celebrated in the usual way by a concert and ball held in the Rakaia Town Hall on Friday. The attendance' waa very good, and the arrangements reflected great credit on the Committee of management.- The programme included songs by Miss, Annie Gates, Miss Roe, Rev. H. Collins, Messrs W. B. Dixon, R. Bruce, I). Miller, & duet by Mrs Broadbent and Miss Roe, triosby Mr Gates and the Misses Gates, recitations by Mr Stony and selections by Mr H. Gites' band from Ashburton. Daring the' interval Mr C. Tucker announced that there would be a similar entertainment in a few' weeks on behalf of the Publio Idbrary. The conoert concluded with a farce " Which shall I marry ?
