THE CASE OF LOUIS CHEMIS.
THE SENTENCE COMMUTED.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] WELLINGTON, August 6. The Executive Council have decided to commute Chemi_* sentence to imprisonment for life. [-■ROM OUR SPECIAL CORRE-PONDBNT.] WEIxLINGTON, August 6. You will have been made aware of the fact that the sentence of death pronounced a few weeks ago on Louis Chemis, who was found guilty of the murder of Thomas Hawkins, a Wellington settler, was to-day commuted to penal servitude for life. Since the conviction and sentence the solicitor for the condemned man has been busy procuring sworn testimony in connection with th e ctse, which he laid before the Executive Council, and the solicitor yesterday pleaded the cause of his c lient before his Excellency the Governor. There appears to be some doubt whether such a course is desirable and in accordance with custom, and Mr Hutchison has given notice to ask the Minister of Justice whether the affidavits and other documents used for the purpose of obtaining a reprieve in the case of Louis Chemis will be made public before the Executive decide as to the course the law should take; whether there is any precedent for the ex parte argument addressed on behalf of Louis Chemis to his Excellency the Governor, reviewing the whole case and the affidavits and documents before referred to, and whether such a course is to be followed in similar cases in future ?
