It is said that if the exportation of pheasants to Australia continues as at present, the species in this district will be exterminated, and at a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society one member suggested that the Government be asked to set apart a piece of ground for the breeding of game. The Auckland City Council have imported the plant for watering the streets with salt water, and the mains are to be laid down at once. NAPIEK, August 3. John Miller, the husband of a lodginghousekeeper, shot himself this afternoon. He was in low spirits through suffering from asthma. OEEYMOUTH, August 4. The coal export for the week was 2950 tons. The weather is remarkably fine. George Mc William, this morning, was committed for trial at Hokitika. Bail was allowed and forthcoming. Another charge was remanded till Saturday next. TIMAEXJ, August 3. Mr Jonas' Timara Tannery yesterday was taken over by a Joint-Stock Company. The capital is .£SOOO, .£37uo of which has already been subscribed. The local saddlers and bootmakers give the product an excellent character, and the demand is stated to be in excess of the output. OAMARU, August 4. About ten o'clock on Saturday night the offices of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company were found to be on jxre, but the I'ire Brigade turning out promptly the building was not much damaged. The fire only charred the wood work of the office in which it took place, some of the papers in the office were destroyed, but they are not supposed to be of much 1, value. No one had been, in the office since five o'clock and the origin of the outbreak is unknown.
