BASEBALL.

CHRISTCHURCH v HAGLEY PARK.

The second match of the season between the Christchurch and Hagley Park Clubs was played last Saturday, and ended, after a pleasant game, in a victory for the former Club by 27 runs to 11. The game was played at Hagley Park, the visitors being without the services of Wilding, Digby, and Cuff, while several of the chosen men were absent from the home club's ranks. The fielding and returning to base of the Christchurch men was decidedly better than that of their opponents, while in the pitching and batting departments there wa? very little to choose between them, Ashby made a couple of splendid catches in the longfield, while H. Rayner obtained a " home run through a good bit to right field. Ridley and Cane showed up splendidly in the fielding department, while Laurie and Pavitt both made some good hits. The pitching was done by Wheatley and Mumford for the losers, and by Ridley and North for the Christchurch Club, Wheatley being if anything the best of the four. Jackman took the position of catcher for the victors, and performed well, having a great, advantage over Rayner, who took the position for the Hagley Park men, by standing close up to the plate and taking the ball on the full. Mr Cooper performed the duties of umpire in his usual impartial and able manner. Appended are the scores :— CHRISTCHURCH CLUB.
