[press association telkgram.] NEW PLYMOUTH, January 17. The second day's racing of the Taranaki J.C Summer Meeting was fairly successful. The weather was dull, and the attendance only medium. Results :— Grand Stand Handicap of 75 sovs—Rufus V Marlborough 2, Cushla 3. Emmett and Escutcheon were scratched. An indifferent •tare saw the colors of Rufus in front, Marlborough a couple of lengths behind. At the back of the course Marlborough tried to close on the leader, but it was no go, and Rufus, full of running, won com.xortably by a couple of lengths; Cushla bad-last. Time, linin 33sec Totalisator, 154—Marlborough. 86; Bufos, 43; Cushla, 25. Dividend, £3 4s. Second Handicap Hurdles, 50 soys—Armourer 1, Clarice 2, Jubilee 3. Pretender and Blue Bell also ran. Ruapehu was scratched. Pretender was the favorite, with Blue Bell next in demand. Jubilee got away first, Blue Bell and Pretender close up. .At the mile post Jubilee and Bine Bell were running together. Armourer last. At the mile and a quarter Armourer closed up, and Bine Bell dropped back beaten. Pretender soon followed her example, and then Armomrer challenged Jubilee, Clarice following'suit. Armourer led into the straight, and kept this place till the finish, winning by a clear length from Clarice, Jubilee third. Pretender fourth, and Brae Bell last. Totalisator, £130—Pretender, 54; BluebelL 34: Armourer, 17; Clarice, 14; Jubilee, 1L Dividend, £8 17s. Hack Hurdles—Leckair 1, Liberator 2, Tommy 3; won with a bit to spare. Dividend, £1 14a. Midsummer Handicap, of 125 soys— Matfixaongh 1, Escutcheon 2, Clogs 3. -does and Escutcheon were the most The race was a procession, Marlhorough getting the best of the start and holding it all the way. Escutcheon ran a race, bat the weight told and he could get a good second. Time,2min44sec. oU&ator, £133. Escutcheon, 54: Clogs, 58; Marlborough, 20. Dividend, £5. 18b. vindal Handicap, of 45 sovs—Ruapehu 1» Emmett 2, Armonrer 3: Eileen was scratched. Emmett was the quickest on his legs, and led past the stand the first time. Boapeha close behind. At the three-qaarter mile Ruapehu went up to Emmett, and the two raced to the milepost, where the former drew slightly away, and the whip was set going on Emmett. Armourer now began to came up, but Buapehn had things as he liked, and won by a length and a half. Armourer a good third. Time, lmin olisec; dividend, £2 ss. Consolation Handicap, 25 soys—Pretender 1, Cloge 2, Tommy 3; only three started. A magnificent race; Pretender led the greater part of the distance when Farrell brought Clogs up, and a desperate struggle up the straight landed Pretender a winner by a short head. Time, lmin 40sec; dividend, £1 lla. A Pony race was won by Leo.
