LIGHT BREAD.

TO THS EDITOR OF THB PRESS.

Sib,—A friend having told mc he had found the bread recently supplied to him by a Christchurch baker very far short of the proper weight, I thought I would test that supplied* to mc. There were three loa-.es supposed to weigh 21b each, one being a brown loaf and the others white. You may imagine my surprise on finding that one of the white loaves, a.square " tin-loaf," was 4o_, and the other, a round one, Soz, and the brown loaf loz deficient in weight. The baker who serves mc is a well-known respectable tradesman, and % therefore conclude that it is "the common practice with the Chriatchurch bakers %o give abort weight-. It does not affect my self very much, my family not being numerous; bot to those who have to proTide bread for a large family, such deficiency as half a pound ia three loaves is a matter for serious consideration. It is very dishonest, to say the least of it, especially when the price of the 21b loaf Is raised from B_d to 3d, I was rather amused when the baker made the excuse x tbat he was not obliged to give full weight in faucy bread, evidently considering tbat there was no dishonesty in giving ■>,k-»t weight in the absence of any law tc p ■:-■, ».nt him. ' Why an ordinary white or _.<>*_, cottage loaf should be termed "fancy bread,** and not be subject to the same law with regard fa weight as the bread tbe bakers ca u ''household bread" I am at a loss to understand. However, it appears to mc that the sooner the law is amended the better. .

I will a»k you to kindly publish this, letter, as I do not thing ft generally known that baker*' bread ia sq deft, dent fn weight, The knowledge ojt It may possibly Jead te some wilted action for remedying ttie e*?U t =lfeurs, fcc^
